It's a valid point but given what was happening at the club, the fact he'd motivated those players to put in that performance is remarkable. What's more remarkable is he was still there to motivate them, he could have just walked. He didn't.
I normally agree with what you post but “remarkable “ is a stretch. If players aren’t self motivated pre season then they are toast. Even the ones who want “out” will put it in to try and get a move, the rest will see a new season as a clean slate to get in and stay in.

I wanted him to stay, I think he’s a top level coach and the club mis managed the summer awfully but let’s not pretend JL comes out of it blameless. He pushed his own agenda before the last season was cold and the interview with his pal sat there in his club tracksuit was Ill advised at best and completely disrespectful to his players, the club and more importantly the fans. Make no mistake throughout the whole process the only person he thought of was himself. Yes we all do that, but we aren’t all in his position as the focal point of thousands of working class wolves fans. In all my years as a wolf, I’ve never watched something as disappointing as that interview.

Can't argue with that. Makes a change from the lazy rewriters of history who harp on about the "mess" and "state" he left behind.

Balanced. I absolutely agree.

Late drama against a “big” club certainly made for quite a winning goal celebration. As other have said thank god for the barriers in the south bank as god know where I’d have ended up.

I remember Bothroyd scoring against them lot down the road, that’s right up there will goal celebrations. Sadly the day before my favourite Aunty dropped down dead at home with a massive brain aneurysm (she was only 46) and I wasn’t in the right frame of mind to go at all but my mom said I should go as Aunty Pat knew what the wolves meant to me. The sheer emotion that came out of me that day as the ball went in is indescribable. I ended up 3 rows in front of my seat and about 10 across, still to this day I don’t know how I ended up there!

A good pal of mine supports them lot and he’s always maintained he’s never seen a goal celebration from a stand like the South Bank that day. Said he couldn’t bear to look left from the SB Lower properly but side eye just caught fans (in his words) “tumbling down the stand like a domino rally”
Nothing wrong with being at the top of a stand and ending up near the pitch 8 seconds later after a goal.....:)

I'll never understand these fans you see across Europe who spend games waving massive flags and those blokes with the loudspeakers that spend the entire game with their back to the pitch. Went to a game in Korea a couple of weeks ago and the fans in the away end I was in were exactly the same unfortunately. Fair play they kept singing and waving flags the entire game but you got the impression that that's what they were there for primarily rather than the actual football. Even when they scored they just kept on singing and waving hardly breaking stride, weird.
Have thought this for a while. Nothing seems to change whether things are going well or badly or even when there’s a goal. As you say the football seems almost an irrelevance. Having said that there are so many flags being waved at some of the grounds I don’t suppose they can see the pitch anyway.

I had a mate, called Kev, who in such circumstances could retain the full contents of a pint of bitter in a soft plastic glass. In the midst of 80's North Bank celebratory pandemonium Kev's upstretched arm could be seen, with its precious pint held like a steady golden beacon, withstanding the ebb and flow of the crowd until he finally came to rest and took a long and calming sip to salute the goal.

So GON being a nice guy = Lopetegui leaving us in a "state"?

A state that saw the team safe of relegation with games to spare.

A state that saw an average of 1.34 PPG, which when applied to a whole season equates to 51 points.

A state that saw an unbeaten preseason and an impressive performance v Rennes.

A state that saw just Ruben Nerves sold from the first XI - it was widely accepted that his replacement João Gomes was signed in the winter.

"Hardly ideal" would be a fair assessment. We were a far cry from "a state".
Well JL obviously didn't think we were in a very good place, otherwise he might have stayed and actually tried to work with the squad we've got.

I think it was clear the reason JL wanted out was because Jeff was less than honest with him about our financial position. And having been through a similar scenario at Seville he didn’t want the same again.

if Jeff or Hobbs were not honest with GON I think you’d find he would walk too. Hopefully there were lessons learned all round

The fact is, and it is a fact. GON didn't walk in to an awful situation.

Just because it wasn't the situation JL wanted or had been told it was, doesn't mean it was a bad one.

Most managers arrive to a mess, where either the team are underperforming or the outgoing manager has left due to poor performance. Neither apply here, it's as good a situation as a new head coach could hope for.

Your understanding of fact and opinion is a tad wide of the mark. Different people will have different opinions regarding the situation of our club when GON walked in. There is nothing factual about that at all. It’s completely, 100% subjective. Fact.

Back in the fifties, sixties and early seventies were the crowds likely to be bigger and/or more vociferous? Was it much louder “back in the day”?

The rot really started with the loss of the Liquidator.

It absolutely was raucous and louder even as late as the Mick/Clipboard relegation season and then the fiasco under Solbakken)Clownders. Quite a few people stopped going then and never came back.

The new North Bank certainly didn't help.

The only time since, and not consistently, we got close to that was under Nuno. The Neves goal vs Derby, beating ManUre and the Dippers in the cup......

I think there was lots with Nuno, Villa at home in Championship, NDaiye scoring late v Barnsley, Neves goal v Everton first game back, United QF to name a few - great memories

So loud in the mid-50s that for a while, as a kid of 6 or 7, I had to stop going with my Dad -- the noise hurt my ears so much I started to cry with the pain (I had very sensitive ears as a kid)!

Did we actually sing in the 50s? Always wondered what the atmosphere must have been like back then

I’m quite surprised to see you admit your error. Didn’t think you had it in you.

I remember going around my mate's in Farndale estate and hearing it loud and proud. Another time coming out of the Stars shop in Newbridge when I was too young to take myself to molineux. All depends on the way the wind is blowing, who we're playing and whether we're being cheated...
