Wolves were Football League runners up to Mcllroy's Burnley (pictured below, front row, second from left) in season 1959-60.
Burnley as a result, qualified for the European Cup but went out in the quarter-final stages when they lost 5–4 on aggregate to Hamburger SV.
Young Boys, Bern (our pre-season opponents) were also in the competition.
My condolences to his family and friends.

Blimey, that name brings back a few memories! He was one of the main reasons why we didn't complete a hat-trick of League titles and the Double in season 59-60, when Burnley pipped us by a single point. Great inside-forward in the 'schemer' mould like Peter Broadbent, Johnny Haynes and George Eastham, as has been said. RIP Jimmy.

Burnley class him as their best ever player, I believe they may well be right. Goodbye Jimmy.

Was there as a little 'un for a 3-3 draw in April 59. McIlroy was a great player in a fine Burnley team at that time. McIlroy and Broadbent on the same pitch - just wow! RIP Jimmy.

He was around when I first got into football and I remember having a football annual with a feature about him. There were so many great players and 'Characters' around then.
A sad loss and indication of the passing of time.
RIP Jimmy
