An admission: I have never followed women's football and have never seen a game, neither live nor on TV.

The Women's World Cup in Canada is starting on 6th June and I notice that the finals have been expanded to 24 teams and the BBC is providing extensive coverage. Every one of the 52 games will be televised on BBC2, BBC3 or via the Red Button and the commentary will be led by Jacqui Oatley. England begin on 9th June against France and William Hill are pricing them at 25/1 to win the tournament. With no other football during June I might decide to watch one or two games to help to pass the long weeks until the Wolves resume in August.

I might keep abreast of it

Good value for the comedy factor though.

Watched the Euro's? a year or 2 back when we were hopless and the Manager got the boot shortly after. It's all a bit slow and the goalies just can't jump!

Terry Christian had it right when he said a decent blokes pub team would beat any Women's side. It is pretty bad.

A lot of ignorance in this thread regarding the quality of the game. It's improved a hell of a lot over recent years with the introduction of the WSL.

As far as I'm concerned it'll always be mainly a participation sport because 99% of football fans only really care about the men's game, which is fair enough. But the actual technical ability and quality of the players is very good.

It's absolutely ridiculous to make this comparison. Obviously men are stronger physically, but people don't make such comparisons with other sports - the women's game needs to be judged on its own merit.

Serena Williams said herself if she played Andy Murray she'd lose in about 5 minutes. Doesn't make women's tennis atrocious though does it?

Good points and the Williams V Murray comment a good analogy but with anything in life it's all about personal taste.

If people enjoy watching women's football good luck to them. I find it boring and being brutally honest utter bloody rubbish. That's not being sexist or derogatory towards women but I've been brought up and used to the mans game. It's faster, more physical, involves far more skill and quality and whenever I do see a game of women's football it lacks so much of those things mentioned.

That doesn't mean those taking part don't have ability, skill, commitment and all the other words you can associate with the mans game but from a spectators POV it is way behind and I do not enjoy it.

I think you should give it another try Essex, like most on here I'd never seen a women's game in 30 years living in England but now I'll go out of my way to watch the U.S. Women's national team. They're a good side with a lot of technical players and the games are usually good to watch. The English side aren't bad either, I actually saw them play last year and enjoyed the game.

I guess because there isn't the same bias and years and years of negative stereotyping to overcome it's much easier to get into over here.

Someone mentioned Alex Morgan, she's a star over here and is my daughters favorite player, she's written a bunch of kids books which the girls in my daughters kids side have all read, she comes across really well when you hear her speak.

My daughter asked me the other day very matter of factly why doesn't Fifa 15 have girls in it?

As I so often say mate it's each to their own and I'm certainly not against the woman's game or anything anti as such.

I've tried to watch a few games on the TV but get so bored after about 5-10 minutes. I just find it really difficult to get excited about it and it doesn't enthuse me at all and I know I would never pay to go and watch a game.

Well I won't be watching like the majority, I assume. :D

Don't get me wrong I've got nothing against the game but It doesn't draw me in like say Women's Tennis or Women's Mud Wrestling I just don't have the attention span or interest for women's football.

The one thing that makes me laugh is how the BBC (and to a lesser extent BT Sport) make out The Women's game is a big deal by giving It so much coverage especially sports bulletins during the news such injuries, transfers & so on.

I mean yes Football is clearly the biggest sport in the world but that's because of the MALE game why do the media assume the same will be for the Women's game when it's clearly not. I even remember last year the moronic BBC on a Monday during Breakfast reporting on some Women's under 20's game and not even mentioning Kell Brook's World Title win over Shawn Porter the first time a Britain had won a World Title on American soil in near 30 years' Apparently.....(Although I recall Darren Barker winning the IBF Title in Atlantic City the year before against Daniel Geale and Nigel Benn stopping WBO Champion Doug DeWitt in 1990, Again in Atlantic City....I've probably contradicted my own case here) I mean you can't force people to care a game they don't care about no matter how you spin it....

Rant over.....for now.

The bbc will most likely increase its coverage of women's football as sky and bt continue to throw money into claiming broadcast rights over the men's game.

I know what you're saying but you don't notice the huge gulf in quality watching women's tennis or women's athletics say. Compared to what we've been force-fead in the men's game over the years the women's game is appalling........i'll probably be watching like!

I got talking to an American girl the other morning a few weeks back, you know to be polite before you kick them out & she said being over here she's trying to get into soccer & she finds the women's game more technical as it flows better than the stop start mans games seems to.

Haha, I've got a better story than that not sure if I should tell it though but it's pre season & I'm a bit hungover still so why not. The mods might edit it so read quick.

Anyway last summer met a girl on a night out as you do, got chatting, drinking etc & she said she was having a few people back afterward to hers as her parents were away on holiday. So we all went back & various things happened I'm sure you can imagine. In the morning I asked if I could use a computer to check the train times or something so she toddled off in her skimpy underwear & brought me back a laptop.

As I went onto the google chrome homepage there's a window with around a dozen boxes of the most visited sites etc , I noticed like mine Mol Mix was one. So I clicked on it instinctively as it's always the first thing I read sadly after the news & obviously as I scrolled I noticed a different name logged in. I asked who's laptop is this 'My Dads' she replied 'Why?', 'oh no reason it's just a nice computer'. I can still remember the feeling of laughter built up inside me now.

Apologies anyway & I would never reveal the poster lol but I feel just as used as her I'm sure, I'll be in & around Dog & Dublet tonight if you want them to keep away haha :)

Just reading an interview with Alex Morgan in Time magazine, she says that when she was honored as one of the 3 best women footballers by UEFA last year, Batter didn't even know who she was!

Another example of his fantastic non prejudiced leadership from the top...

Doesn't make women's tennis atrocious though does it?

Well, it does really, the overall standard and consistency is atrocious, I thought this was generally accepted even within tennis itself?

I guess the point is though, as long as women's football is competitive then it can be good to watch.
People don't go and watch pub teams for the standard of football, they go because it's fun and a good way to clear a hangover.

That's a British thing though, not many girls play football and the teams are not very good. We're still 6th in the World though.
The Americans do it well, and Australia is stunning for the amount of women and girls who play the game..about 400,000 registered female players from a total of about 2 million, and i see them playing every Saturday morning, hundreds of them. That's a fifth of all players.
Totally alien if you're British and not used to seeing that...you have to do a double-take because you assume it's men.
They also play AFL and rugby and ruck the $$$$ out of each other, that's another eye-opener and very good to watch :) .

If the % was increased to British population levels, over a million girls would be playing football every weekend?
I haven't got any figures for the UK, but how many women's teams are there in Wolverhampton? A handful? How many girls play any sport when they leave school?
That may be why it looks rubbish, not enough people participate to drive up the standard and it's not seen as "the thing" that girls do in Britain.

As long as it's competitive, there's nothing wrong with it as a spectacle and the inventiveness and skill levels can be high because the pace is slower. Horses for courses.

She must have forgotten to wear her tight shorts that day, or he'd have noticed her.

There's some truth in that when I've been watching it, they keep the ball in play when they should let it go out to give themselves a chance to breathe, or they don't clear the ball and try and play too much football in high risk areas where a man's team would have hammered it into row Z.
It does go end-to-end a lot more without a break.
Maybe the tactics are still a bit naive and haven't reached the required cynical levels yet.

I shall watch the odd game, if only for the fact that, by en large, the goalkeepers are hilariously bad.

Ah female goalie, back in school we used to go to an indoor football centre for 6 a side for one afternoon a week in our final year, there were two girls who joined in who had absolutely no interest in football. They were rather well proportioned though and always used to go in goal, it was a rare event to see any attempt to stop a shot against them as it was an unspoken agreement to hammer the ball at the girl in goal at the time as she would jump out of the way.....ah the joys of youth.

I obtained some UEFA "Top Trumps" a few years back at the Champions League final. One of the stats on the cards for each country is amount of registered female Players.

England - 89,640
France - 109,124
Netherlands - 127,488
Norway - 105,340
Sweden - 99,980
Denmark - 105,595
Germany - 1,077,215
Spain - 28,087
Italy - 18,966
Portugal - 2,057

This was from 2013 so the numbers will have changed but Germany were miles ahead. Definite disparity between Northern and Southern Europe too.
