Just told my dad on the phone that Ron Atkinson had died as I'd read this thread. He said he was going to call his brother to let him know as he'd met Big Ron as a kid and it had a big impact on him.

Will have to call him back after rereading this thread and tell him Big Ron is very much alive.

RIP Ron Saunders.

I can just see the conversation at the Pearly Gates now...
God: "So you still think his first touch was no good?"

RIP Ron. Did us an almighty favour in the 80's.

Was a great man of his age to be fair, and as mentioned we should always be grateful to him for the greatest gifts we ever got. Thoughts with his family.

RIP.

When I see people say Big Ron my immediate thought was Ron Atkinson.
Me too.
I even had Ron A image in my head when starting thread.
Blame either alcohol distortion while cooking or being stupid. Or both if you prefer.
Heard news on Talksport, reminded me of league win.

Remember him well, quite miserable and dry.
Done well at the claret and blue lot
He had a major hand in our revival in 1986!
RIP Ron

Tough as nails, but also quite a shy man with a sense of humour. God Rest Ron.

I never knew about his playing career as a striker, including 160 goals in 260 games for Portsmouth.

He sat behind me once in the old molineux street stand, scouting. I told him I wouldn't sign no matter how much he offered. He didn't reply.
Told him we had no vacancies. He never smiled.
Sat stone faced ,then went.
Don't think he liked me.

I remember him in the mid/late 70's doing the daily school run in Solihull. Nice bloke and understandably a legend at Villa, winning them the league after selling their best players Gray, Little, Gregory and others the season before. Shame that he fell out with Deadly Doug Ellis and resigned before they lifted the European Cup.

Glad the title has been changed - there is only one Big Ron and that's not Ron Saunders. The latter created a decent side at Villa, no doubt. RIP Ron Saunders.

Played his part in what was a great era for Midlands football (East and West). Sadly England managers of that period seemed to treat the Midlands as a wasteland they had to pass through to reach the North West from London. RIP
