Wolves are set to launch a trailer for a new film charting the club’s entertaining 1967 foray to the USA. In a tale not well known outside the Black Country, the club were involved in a bid to kickstart football stateside after the popularity of the 1966 World Cup.

At the time, the United Soccer Association opted to import whole teams from Europe and South America for the competition’s inaugural season.

The film, produced in partnership with FootballCo and football magazine Mundial, illustrates how young players from Molineux became ‘LA Wolves’ and ended up getting more than they bargained for — partying with The Monkees and playing their part in the so-called Summer of Love. The film is out later this year.

I posted on the Hwang thread a few weeks ago a video that was about a Korean tv show making dinner for the Wolves staff. Shi and Russell Jones were eating together and Jones made a comment about there being a premiere in Los Angeles and that they'd do one in Wolverhampton. It seemed a bit random but I guess he must have been referring to this.

Thanks for posting Urko, I think that will be really interesting.

If it catches on and the club can make something of it like like the whole Wrexham Netflix thing, I think it has the potential to generate interest in Wolves in California.

1967 - the greatest year for music, never surpassed; the Beatles 'Strawberry Fields', The Stones 'Ruby Tuesday', Procol Harum 'A whiter Shade of Pale' and in the States, The Doors 'LA Woman', Aretha Franklin 'Respect' and of course the Monkees and a song for all Wolves fans - 'Daydream Believer'!

Great! Thanks for the tip Urko! That talented, exciting Wolves team of 1967, promoted from the 2nd Division, is one I look back on with much fondness. Those of a certain vintage on here will recall the wonderful skills of players like David Burnside, Ernie Hunt, Waggy, Peter Knowles of course, and The Doog who was exceptionally deceptive on the floor.

The 2nd time was in 1969 (I think) as we played as Kansas City Spurs where we won the cup.

Do you remember when he would entertain the crowd at half time with keepee upees for the 15mins, I didn't really rate him either but was a good stand in for injuries,
sorry just noticed post above, you beat me to it LOL.

No worries chignal. Must be his half time entertainment for the fans I remember most. I was only about 10 at the time.

FWIW the LA Wolves' "owner" Jack Kent Cooke was a fascinating character and one of the first real sports entrepreneurs in North America, first (as a Canadian) trying to get a Major League Baseball team to Toronto as early as the 1950's, and failing at that, he relocated to Los Angeles, where he first bought a minority share in the Washington Redskins (now Commanders) NFL franchise when its majority owner suffered a stroke in the early '60's. After that, he bought the Los Angeles Lakers (NBA), founded the expansion Los Angeles Kings (NHL), and then the Wolves in the mid-'60's. He became the majority (then sole) owner of the Redskins later in his life, built the Los Angeles Forum a/k/a The Fabulous Forum to house his NBA and NHL teams, and was always looking at fresh new sporting ventures.

He was apparently self-taught, came from a working-class background with no university background, sold encyclopedias door-to-door as a teenager, and hustled his way to the top of the heap in US sports ownerships by his early 50's.

I find it fitting that this man of initially modest means but with huge dreams has a small part in this club's heritage.

If/when this movie comes out, I will want to take the day off and watch it at least twice. The title match serves as a great trailer ...

The film about this shown at the Civic Hall was screened on Saturday morning, October 12, 1968.
Wolves played Chelsea at Molineux that afternoon and that made Match of the Day that night. Two last minute goals featured in a 1-1 draw. Knowles' extremely late equaliser prompted him to celebrate by sticking his fingers up to the North Bank, presumably in response to criticism he had been subject to.

Think the American trip was the beginning of the end for Peter Knowles time with Wolves.....
Believe it mentions in Waggy's book that was where Knowles took an interest in the Jehovah's.

I went to the Civic to watch this, it was weird as fans did not know if they should shout or not, they did and acted like the games were live
