Karl Henry: Option for central back?

The team is filling up with a surplus of quality players in the midfield but not much is happening in defense.

Both fullback positions are vulnerable with questionable performances so far. For CB we have Johnson who seems to be solid, but with no obvious partner.

Could Karl henry be that man? He is an excellent defensive midfielder, tall, strong, cool headed and quite a good distributer of the ball. He is intelligent and coachable, always puts in an effort. He is 29 and could even extend his career with a few years playing as CB. What more could be desired?

In his early years he even played regularly as a right back.

Could be a great option for us if the new signings take over the midfield.

Opinions?

(PS: Karl of course.)

We are fine at Centre Back! Our two fullback positions are the problem.

Surely his obvious partner is Margreitter? Unless I imagined that signing.

I was thinking something similar myself the other day. Could definitely do a job - ignore the negative posts.

Margereitter is still fresh and could be a great player for us in time. Berra has stated his intention to leave, Bathh is also inexperienced.

Henry could be a great cover for CB, could even cover for our fullbacks if need be. He has everything a good central back needs to have.

If we at some point play a midfield of Peszco, Doumbia, Boukari, Sako,

We might want a commanding and dominating CB with skills on the ball.

It's Karl with a 'K' and I am wondering if Foowolf has missed the 'l' from the middle of his name ;)

Still too valuable in midfield to even contemplate moving him from that position. Also think he lacks the aerial ability to be an effective centre-back.

Not sure he is tall enough tbh...

And it's a hell of a position to convert to late in your career. It's so specialist and so crucial, because it's part of the spine of the team and all other positions take the lead from it. It's far more complicated than converting to full back for instance.

Can only think of Kenny Burns (back in the day) Steve Sutton and Michael Carrick who have tried to convert to that position late in the the day, with mixed results..

Cue numerous other examples

Kenny Burns started there; was converted to a forward at Blues and then reverted at Forest.

Steve Walsh, or was that the other way? - Paul Warhurst at Wednesday definitely was the other way as was Sutton to be fair. Carrick was only due to injury problems for United. Dion Dublin at Coventry

Dion Dublin to name another - it happens.

True, true,

But our Karl isn't tall enough IMHO. Most centre backs are al least 6ft 2 or 3 these days

(cue list of shorter centre backs :questionmark:)

He is a valuable player and could even be valuable dropping down to CB if need be. Not necessarily permanently but as an option if either we want to play a more attacking midfield, or if the back four are in trouble for any reason, injuries, etc.

I am trying to see the options here. Not creating a new team!

Sergio Ramos, Real Madrid, World Champion, Spain, Height: 6.o.

Don't necessarily think it is anything to do with his height, more that he just isn't very good in the air (which is a must for a centre-half in the Championship).

Did I also mention he is still too important for us in midfield?...

Agreed, he is an important piece, but should we ever want to play a more attacking midfield of:

Peszco-Doumbia-Bakarey-Sako

Or if we have injuries in defence

Or both

I believe henry could do the job.

And do it well.

We have more options at CB than fullback, but the Derby game showed we have little in the ways of options for a defensive midfielder. Our new signings look exciting, but we need a defensive anchor. I am not a KH fan, but the evidence of my eyes recently when he has not played, suggest he is the best we have at that job at the moment. For that reason he should be the last player we look to move.
