I was born in West London and my early years were spent, with my brother, on the terraces at Griffin Park before my love affair with Wolves started. Over the years I've lived at Catterick and watched Darlington when they were in the Conference (good fun as you could change ends at HT!) When I lived in Norfolk a work colleague had 2 Norwich STs so I'd get down to Carrow Rd a lot - greatly enjoyed seeing Robbie Keane's debut there! When in the RAF we lived in Moenchengladbach and saw Borrusia a few times - always loved it when the announcer and the crowd shouted out the goal scorers name. And when we lived in Wales saw a bit of Swansea when they were good - Michu and Sigurdsonn and followed the EL games and think they got knocked out to Napoli (?) in the Rd of 32. I've always lived some distance from Wolves so to keep my live football habit going I've enjoyed my time at other places although none can match a rocking Molineux!

No. Only Wolves for me but I’m a football fan and scour all the tables and like a few teams in other divisions.

Shrewsbury, going to their home matches with my old man when Wolves were away, as a kid.
Also used to like to go to Shrewsbury if we weren’t playing, especially for an early or late season night game under the lights. Lost interest when they moved to the New Meadow, just isn’t the same as a few pints around the town before a slow walk down over the bridge looking at the big old floodlights over on the opposite side lighting up the River Severn before in and wandering around the terraces picking a spot to stand. The new ground is soulless.

The New Meadow is the worst though. Edge of town, no atmosphere, no redeeming features, four flat pack stands you can probably get in B&Q. It’s turned one of the best days out in football into one of the worst. Its only partly redeemed by a decent pub crawl down Belle Vue Road.

Strangely I actually quite like that one, even though on paper it’s the same as Shrewsbury’s. Ballache to get away from at the end mind.

On the edge of an industrial park with no pubs within 2 miles great. Always less than half empty.

Great set up outside though when we played them in League One.

Have been there as a neutral as well, and whilst the location is crap, I do like the ground itself, even if I can’t entirely explain why.

Was just going to ask you what exactly do you like about it? The big car park? Even the floodlights keep packing up on a Thursday night 5 a side pitches. It is simply awful.

Although obviously I never went to Gay Meadow I saw plenty of pics etc of it and it oozed character and was a quintessential old school English Football ground much like places such as Feethems.

As a kid I had that classic book about English Football grounds by Simon Inglis such a great book and I read up on all 92 grounds :D

I think the steepness of the stands, the brickwork outside has a good build quality, it just felt better than Shrewsbury for instance, which is cheap as hell. Admittedly the location might put me off going there regularly if I was a fan, but first time I went there was to complete the 92 in 2008, second time when we played them in League One and they had made a huge effort outside with beer tents and activities going in for the kids. I’d actually struggle to think of many grounds that heaving outside before a game. Maybe it was because I wasn’t expecting much from it (having been to Shrewsbury regularly) that I ended up being pleasantly surprised.

Obviously it hasn’t got the character of Layer Road, but then that was a complete and utter ****hole of a ground. Shallow terraces, awful facilities. Can’t say I’d have been tempted to go along there much either if I was a local.

Each to your own but give me a packed or even half empty Layer Road when they used to play on Friday nights anytime. Can honestly say i have never heard a Col U fan say they prefer new ground.

Depends really.

When I was in Uni I used to watch Cheltenham Town on the regular.

Through youth and to present day I watch any of Leyton Orient, Dagenham or Luton (good mate has a box) depending on Wolves schedule.

Spot on ricki ! Over here as I dare say you can imagine at the moment there are lots of reruns of The Big Match and other retro football. Talking to Mate about this and we were saying how you could tell if you were shown a picture of a empty ground you could say which one it was.An example was Chelsea's Stamford Bridge which now looks like so many other stadiums.

Now thanks to a standard design the home stadiums of Derby, Southampton and Middlesbrough to name three are virtually the same as they are designed by an architectural firm to a standard plan ( in the same way Tesco and Sainsbury supermarkets are ) then at one time it was Barr Consruction who had and may well still have a precast concrete plant where these are made and transported to where ever then assembled like a giant Airfix kit ! ( I believe that St Mirren, Livingstone and Inverness are all Barr Construction built as well )

That doesn’t surprise me!

I’ve actually had the grand tour of Layer Road, even been up on the TV gantry on top of Main Stand, the ground just did nothing for me though to be honest, dare I say I preferred Tiptree United!

By the way, shouldn’t someone be massively kicking up a fuss and completely overreacting because we’ve got a football thread in the OT Forum

Yes that's so true, every ground back then was unique with its own charms and character. Quirky stands, semi derelict terraces, concrete crush barriers, huge floodlights.

you can still find a few quirky grounds like Raith Rovers with its weird mainstand, Arbroath right up next to the North Sea, Brechin with its hedge etc but they are becoming rare as they get replaced by identikit stadiums built from the same plan

As an aside my favourite stadium designer was Archibald Leitch : classic stuff

I was in Sheffield in the season we won Div 3 and I used to go and support the away team at Bramall Lane whenever they were at home and Wolves weren't playing or I couldn't get there. Happy days.

I’m originally from Wolverhampton and support Wolves but I moved away at 22 (many years ago!) and lived in and around Blackpool for many years and I still have family and friends there and I would probably classify it as “home” even though I’ve since lived down south for years. I’ve watched Blackpool many, many times and when going to their games I will see a lot more people I know than I would at Wolves games.

I’ve had some great days and weekends watching Blackpool over the years, often with loads of mates, around the country and at Wembley and the Millennium watching play-off finals, etc but it’s always been a little hollow with regards to the game. Whilst I always want them to win it’s more for my mates and the atmosphere as it doesn’t really get me.

With Wolves it’s massively different. It’s not just the game it’s the whole build up, the anticipation, the travel and the pre-match pubs and the same afterwards, even if it’s a nothing game in League 1. I’m absolutely buzzing all day, even the evening before. As for the game I’m totally immersed and at home I have to go in the South Bank as I find it really difficult to sit down and I can jump around and let myself go.

Blackpool is socialising, entertainment and a day out but Wolves is love.

My step dad used to take me to watch willenhall at noose lane when my mom deemed me too young for Molineux
Went down a few times too, I recall watching them play Newport, in the league, about 2 or years after watching wolves play them. Circa 1990
