Just noticed on the official site news piece about the new youngster that we've got some fancy new mottos in the dressing room/changing area. Four key moments of any game.

1. In possession
2. Not in possession
3. Regaining possession
4. Losing possession

Talk about stating the obvious! I take it this is TC's work!

Thanks for spoiling what has been a good day so far Moira:D

I try not to think of Connor being involved with the club.

I do believe that is taken from our 'Club Football Philosophy.'

First appeared at some point, mid-shambles, towards the end of last season (to much derision).

All it's describing though is four different stages in a game, other than the ball bring out of play these 4 things are all that happen. I think I could understand this from the age of 8.

I remember ther club philosophy debacle from last season.

I wonder if Stale is aware that this exists. Embarrassing. Beyond, Belief.

Surely it should be:

pass, control, pass (repeat as necessary), score

but then...

save? block? shunt? deflect?

tackle? dive? throw? foul?

what about....:

beer, bovril, pie, dump

Kids football is small sided to start with these days to get them to have more touches of the ball and so we dont end up with the current problem of professionals being unable to move/recieve a pass/play the ball to feet etc that the current crop have. Many will not be playing 11 aside until the age of 13 +

The 'new project' through-out the whole of the club is to teach them better skills/techniques as they progress and working as a team both in attack and defence is all part of it.

It's to do with the academy,as part of their coaching syllabus the kids get coached in different aspects of the 4 key aspects of the game the academy have pin pointed.A lot more to it than it looks.

Explains a lot if being in possession is described as a moment.

Possession Rules OK!
The ball is your lover - possess her, caress her
Being possessive is a way of life
Possession is 9/10ths of the war

Possess don't pose
The future is Orange (Gold) possession
Positive possession grinds the $$$$$$$s down
Play like a man possessed

If it was TC it would read.

Kick Off
Pass back to keeper
Hoooooooooooof
Repeat until goal is scored.

4 Key Moments of a game in the MM premiership era:

1: Karl Henry sticking his leg out about a second too late as the ball whizzes by and into the net
2: Dave Edwards purring engine moving him into 'danger zones'
3: Milijas scratching his head after another of his passes is failed to be read by a teammate, him having been brought on with seven minutes to go to try to salvage something from 2-0 down
4: Mick declaring how everyone had put a shift in and if we keep playing with this much effort..............

They changed it from Mick's original:

1. When in possession put head down and get rid
2. When not in possession run backwards, don't tackle
3. Regaining possession and then....see 1.
4. Losing possession, often and needlessly as possible and then see 2.
5. Call everyone a muppet 3 years after everyone stopped using that insult.

You don't think it's a subtle tactic to emphasise just how important possession is?

You may think that kids aged 8 would understand this but an awful lot of them don't. I referee a lot of mini soccer and I see kids standing and watching anything but what is happening on their pitch quite often.

Kids just want the ball at that age, there isn't a lot of tactical nous when they are that young.

Dave Jones has developed a nifty tactic to deal with the current obsession with possession. First saw it at Wolves in a couple of games towards the end of our promotion season, when the team allowed the opposition to have possession and lined up in two banks of four. The players were then positioned to run into space when the opponents' move broke down, and everyone knew where everyone would be. It was v. effective.

Spatial logic dictates that you can only ever have either possession or position, so the natural antidote to possession is to ensure that players are positioned properly, and absorb the energy produced by possession. This has long been understood in coaching philosophy. But correct positioning is just as difficult to acquire as a team unit as consistent possession is. What can you do......
