I hope she becomes a successful ref -
a) we're one or two (or lots) short of decent refs, and
b) high-profile female role models in the male-dominated side of the game we love are relatively few and far between.

In the NFL, the number of female officials has started to grow.

Although swamped by the number of male officials, they are simply seen - by most - as 'officials', regardless of their being a different sex.

Hoping this attitude will (continue to) develop in the PL.

Congratulations to her. I hope (in a good way) she doesn’t become the story! A quiet incident free game.
That’s precisely what happened, in the first EFL game she referred in April 2021 for Harrogate Town v Port Vale.

She has climbed the ladder excellently and this appointment is fully warranted.

The bar is at an all time low. She couldn't possibly be any worse than her male counterparts surely?

Let's hope she puts them all to shame, although it is a Howard Webb appointment so I'll not hold my breath.

Hope she realises the mans game has totally different rules to the women's, come to think of it, has she ever played men's elite football?

Seriously, well done, now go and smash it!

Rebecca Welch will referee Fulham v Burnley on December 23rd at Craven Cottage.

Many Congratulations to her and no doubt this will light a spark in many young girls in football.
shouldn’t even be newsworthy, says a lot that it still is.

Good luck to her, i look forward to seeing players trying to treat her with the lack of respect they do others!

Seven professional men's games refereed and she's in the PL

There's also going to be Sam Allison, the first black Premier League ref for 15 years. Thats an incredible stat.
Only the 3rd black ref since the Premier league began.

I don't think that's correct. 7 this season, 39 altogether, 9 in the WSL. Still not much experience though, hope she's ready.
Stand corrected, didn't realise Transfermarkt was only displaying the current season, did think it was a bit quick! (which it still is)

It is sort of shocking, but would be interesting to know how many black officials there are?
Is it just a lack of black refs rather than any discrimination

Congratulations to her. She is a little inexperienced but surely can't be worse than some who have been with us for years.
Hope she encourages other girls and women.

Has Sian Massey never reffed a top flight game? I could have sworn she had.

Congrats to Rebecca Welch, hope she's a good one - we need them!

She's been assistant ref in the top flight, but only reffed lower down I think.

As it happens Massey-Ellis, will be assistant VAR for the game Welch referees

It will be interesting to see if she's subjected to the barrage of obscenities, from the usual suspects, that her male colleagues are!!!

I can’t imagine he could be worse than Rennie

Good luck to her if she's good enough. She will find it hard to be worse than some of PGMOL's "finest".

Also good to see a former player come through as a PL referee.
