Yeah I think the covid part is whats caused the problem, basically they racked up huge debts and their wage bill is astronomical, above £200million way above turnover of £181million. If you look at their most recent set of accounts they have tried to claim covid cost them £90million over 3 years.

Most clubs seem to have referenced covid as being a factor in accounts but mainly because it meant broadcast money was deferred to a different accounting year. Everton are potentially one of the few if only to say it had a tangible loss in other areas of the business, which may be where the PL are dubious.

They have also tried to claim in their accounts that the pandemic meant they lost money because the market value of players decreased, and they were unable to sell some players whose contracts then expired
Of course, the fact that they were running big debts before covid, paying over the odds for crap players that had little resale value had nothing to do with it.

Prem league will always protect the greed and position of the so called big teams
Salary caps etc come in, watch Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs start talking european super league again

I probably don't know enough about US sport to comment, but as I see it the system is designed to pretty much ensure a rotation of winning teams. This is both a huge culture change to European sport, and also only works if you withdraw that element of jeopardy. So basically a model with a wage cap, the vast bulk of the money coming from a division of pooled TV, and no relegation. Nobody wants that do they? Alternatively a free for all, where the top 6 is perpetually (even more than it is already) the playthings of billionaires and states.

So some sort of FFP where you can spend what you can earn surely has to be made to work. They just need more competence and transparency.
One further thing that l would add is a single legal system applying (the odd Canadian team participating doesn't change that).

The US system simply wouldn’t work here. The PL doesn’t operate in a vacuum, it’s part of the English league system and part of UEFA. Clubs have the jeopardy of relegation and the competition against other European clubs in European competitions with as much financial benefit as the PL, so whether you’re looking up or down, there is jeopardy in this league. That doesn’t mean some form of salary cap isn’t feasible, but it also means it’s not the only potential solution to ensure sustained competition.

For instance, a truly independent regulator, properly resourced, could independently assess each PL clubs finances and provide tailored guidance to ensure all clubs operated on a sustainable financial basis, while having freedom to develop their club. While I think owners should be permitted to inject capital into their club, I don’t think this should be used to write off losses stemming from unsustainable spending. Equally, I think newly promoted clubs should be allowed to spend heavily to build a competitive squad, and similarly clubs newly qualified for European competitions. All this requires a tailored set of guidelines for each club, and since this would be open to abuse if self administered, why an independent advisory group would need to operate it.

This season? Still won't send them down. Not enough.

They're appealing it. Don't see why unless they think it might reduce this season's penalty.

10 points is easy to swallow this season with the dross down there.

Would be funny if it was reduced on appeal to 8 points, but the decision took so long it applied to next season and took them down, having been 20 points clear of relegation this season!

Breaking news on the BBC 10 points, think they'll still be OK though!! 5 points off safety, with a lot of games left to play!

Only 2 points actually, as Luton now fourth to bottom. Likely won’t be anywhere near enough to relegate them.

Well I'm not sure what people want, most believed that they'd get a slap on the wrist. It is true that if there was ever a season to get this punishment this was it.

Baahahaha.
So…10 points for Everton, how many for Citeh?
Surely has to be expulsion if that’s the yardstick, or like 50-60 points to make it a reasonable shot at being relegated.

It's not that simple though.

Everton have broken and disregarded rules that are already in place. Simple, open and shut case.

City have allegedly fraudulently inflated their earnings to avoid breaking the rules that are in place.

Good to finally see some kind of action being taken. Had hoped it'd be more than 10 points tho! That'll take them level with Burnley...
