Arsene Wenger the FIFA head of development is to propose the new offside rule at IFAB to be that clear daylight must be seen between the last defender and any part of the body an attacker can score with. Much better than the farce we have now. Even suggested in today's media could be in place for the Euros.

Go get em Arsene.

Someone who actually understands why offside is there in the first place.
Please let this happen.

That’s a great start to end the current totally farcical rule.

Just one thing though, if a players hand/arm is in front of his body and in an offside position, will that be offside?

Read the OP again.

"Any part of the body the attacker can score with."

So daylight between those parts

I think it would be great for the game if the ‘daylight officials’ would view each incident through a really nice toblerone tunnel

For this to work needs to be the whole body like it used to be. So muxh easier on a Var review to see daylight between the whole body.

Otherwise there will still be aruguments about the frames they froze it on and weather the foot is completely in daylight, as u cant cant see daylight been a body part will still cause arguments.

What would be really good would be for the new rule to be brought in ASAP and all disallowed goals reviewed retrospectively and the table adjusted accordingly :)

There will be arguments over freeze frames regardless.

In Wenger we trust.

Won't happen, Wenger isn't part of the IFAB and has no power and not much influence.

In my opinion it'll be a disaster. Lots more goals, same argument as to whether a part of a player is level or not, defenders have had help this season but they'll have to learn how to defend situations all over again. It will cause absolute carnage and then sides will start defending deeper.

Just take away the forensic analysis and have a look at it with... I dunno... eyes maybe? By a linesman. The rule doesn't need changing, it's the outrageous application of it through VAR that needs changing

Just think about it. They said Refereeing standards weren’t good enough so instead of improving referee standards they brought in VAR. Now that they’ve realised VAR isn’t good enough instead of improving refereeing standards and scrapping VAR they are adjusting the rules in order to keep it.

The VAR farce just keeps on compounding itself whilst someone somewhere is getting richer and referees no longer run out games.

So if there’s “daylight” between an attacker’s head and the last defender but his feet are in line with him then it’s offside! Hmmmm...more clarification is needed.

Isn't that they do in the MLS? Sure some MLS viewers will know if it works better.

It's just moving the line, yes, but maybe it would steer the emphasis back towards attacking over defending.

At the moment it feels like everything benefits the defender.

But, ideally, we would just adopt the more lenient model as VAR was intended anyway. Let play continue in an attacking move, and when there is doubt, if a person in front of a monitor can't tell if it's offside inside two or three seconds and one look, then it isn't offside. That is surely the definition of clear and obvious. The moment you are analysing and drawing lines, it is no longer under the clear and obvious remit. Give the attacker the benefit unless the infringement is obvious to the naked eye.

I think now that the genie is out of the bottle it's going to be difficult to put it back in. There are already conspiracy theories on here concerning VAR decisions being weighted in favour of the 'big' teams. If we now go back to what is effectively a subjective view of offside, you're probably going to create more controversy. I think we're stuck with drawing the lines but at least those lines will hopefully be more in favour of the attacking team.

Edit: And also it will be even more important for refs/asst refs to not stop the play until the move has played out because to the naked eye, attackers will be more likely to look offside when they're not.

I heard about 3 interpretations of the rules on Talksport this morning... Suffice to say Brazil struggled with every element of understanding it.

My god he's thick.

I interpret it that it's clear daylight between all legitimate goalscoring parts of the body.

Ie if all of your body with the exception of your arm/hand is beyond the defender then it's offside.

In that same situation, your heel is level but your body is angled forward then it's onside.

In principle this is better and closer to how offside has traditionally been interpreted. The devil is in the detail however for all the reasons mentioned above. For instance, VAR is often based on camera angles not directly in line with the incident, so is it literally daylight from the angle of the camera? If so, what is offside will vary depending where the incident takes place relative to the camera.

I still have a horrible feeling whatever offside rule they decide upon there will still be lines across the pitch and it will still take minutes for the officials to make a decision? They also have to sort out handball and penalties?

If var was used like it's supposed to be used no one here would have a issue with it. Var is supposed to correct clear and obvious errors. Not to be forensically analyzed to see if a players stud is 1 mm offside.

Sorry but when someone is running through against us in the first game of next season and the big toe of his trailing leg is deemed to overlap Coady's leading foot, making him 2 yards offside but now onside, all those lauding this idea will be up in arms.

IFAB general secretary says no offside rule change at Feb AGM.

The law doesn't need changing, just need some common sense applied, which the PGMOL badly lacks. The guidelines for VAR already say that it should be used to overturn "clear and obvious" mistakes only, with offsides included in this definition. So the tools are already there.

Well there is certainly one tool there-a big one

If they can't sort it in 30 seconds the original refs decision stands... Would be my suggestion

Just get rid of the lines and do it by eye, if it's too close to call then you're onside.

Or you just stick with the on field decision.

Either way, no need for loads of stupid lines. Just have one and judge from there. Quick and easy.
