Chelsea H -Christmas Eve ?

With it being being a 4 hour round trip and having two small children, Christmas eve rules me out. I can see why a lot will like the idea, I know a few years ago id have definitely have been one of them.
I probably wouldn't have minded it years ago, but for anyone with young children or grand children it's not ideal.

What I don't understand is why people think it's great that's it's on Christmas Eve when it just means that there is no Saturday match.
Before children & grand children I would have loved a Saturday match on the pop all day, and then be able to do it all again on Christmas Eve.

And to people who say you have all year to spend time with your family, it's not just another day. Traditionally families all over the country are travelling to be with loved ones over the festive period.

Statement from Wolves 1877 Trust

Personally the game on Xmas Eve doesnt make much difference. If it fell on a weekday I would be at work anyway, might get to leave a bit early 3.30 - 4 if the boss is in a festive mood so with the game on at 1pm I will be home around the same time to commence the festivities at home. I feel for anyone having to travel a distance though and can understand the outrage from that view point.

Thats the wife with no Xmas presents this year then.
;) Just make sure you do at least get her a card. I remembered a pressie, but left it too late with the card and in those days shops weren't open all hours. So the best I could do was a card to 'My Best Friend', oh dear! Years later in the parting volleys of the marriage that sin was recalled - with venom! There was another 'sin' of similar magnitude to be 'taken into consideration' but I'll leave that for another day.:)

Reading posts 86 and 87 in quick succession has given me some much needed amusement on what is yet another day ruled by a funeral attendance. :expressionless:

I also think if the fixture was reversed and we were travelling away Christmas eve the reaction of some would be different with the logistics involved. So I can see why fan groups aren't happy and there is a lot of fuss, but lets be honest football sold its soul for the tv money a long time ago.

The knock on impact for Brentford away is crap as well.

Do clubs have to agree to the fixture?

I would have assumed that Jeff and his Chelsea counterpart would have the opportunity to air thier views.

Assuming they have said yes as the clubs are financially compensated.

I know the word tradition is sometimes seen as a swear word in today's society, sometimes quite rightly, but Christmas overall IS tradition itself. Everybody has their routines around this time and I would say Christmas Eve is definitely a day full of this; whether it's going for beers with friends, travelling miles to stay with family, going to any church/carol services with family, finishing wrapping presents, prepping as much of the dinner as possible or just having family time with your kids in the calm before the storm. People even have set films they watch and songs they listen to. I say this as a 40 year old married man with no kids but football really has no place on Christmas Eve.

Been some media traction today, all seems to revolve around Chelsea though of course.

I mean it's viable, apart from one bloke I shudder at the thought at having to go from Surrey, through central London, up to Birmingham, across to Wolverhampton, and do that trip in reverse, on Christmas Eve. It is insane.

Yes, that's all I'd say. In terms of travel there will be 3000 Chelsea fans making a trip, but a pretty big number of Wolves fans making trips of a similar length too. That's if travel is the main objection, although that's a tricky one, I mean I remember going to London for I think Spurs, West Ham and Chelsea last season and there being a train strike for all 3, then we played Palace as an evening kick off, so it's hardly a unique travel conundrum.

I’m absolutely loving the knicker twisting going on about this fixture. If you want to be with your family so be it,there’s plenty of ways to watch the game at home and even so you could always listen on the radio and see f your moaning that you have to be there then that’s your choice

Nice of you to get a kick out of others misfortune. ******

I’m more ****ed off it means Brentford is now on a day in at work, and will be the day after too!

You really are a sad sod. When you get screwed over don't whinge when others enjoy their gloat!

not at all I just find it funny that folks are moaning. Nobody is putting a gun to anyone’s head to go to the game. It’s on tv so not like you can’t watch it anyway be it legally or not.

Funny that loyal fans who like to go to the games have been shafted? What a lovely person you are.

How have they been shafted?

Many fans would have to work on Christmas Eve if it didn’t fall on a weekend (some do even if it was a weekend)

Do they tell their employer they won’t come in?

No match day will suit all fans. It’s funny how no one moans about Boxing Day games even though that’s always a weekend or a bank holiday. Yet kick up a fuss about Xmas eve games. I

It’s the same fans who moan about the new Sunday 6pm kick offs or Saturday 8pm kick offs but say nothing about the Monday night games.

Shafted? All I can see folks moaning about is the fact they have to stay at home with the family and not go to the game.priorities.

What's the betting this is the first of a 2 phase approach by the Premier League.

Can you get odds on them moving it to an evening kick off, to improve attendance at the last minute?

Other thought is they're hoping that with a smaller crowd the TV audience won't be hearing 'the premier League is corrupt' chant quite so loudly..

As somebody who wasn't planning to go to the game (using Everton as my Christmas game this year), it's great timing to sit back, relax and get the Christmas drinks open with some live football on the tele.

And given it's Christmas, hopefully not too much of a mood killer if we get stuffed like a turkey.

That is a huge worry. A Var wrecked Christmas Eve/Day/Boxing Day is more than I wish to contemplate. Having to take a shillelagh to the pet turkey is bad enough .... but Varred festivities as well ..... :anguished:

Because boxing day games are a long accepted tradition, and the day is nowhere near as significant as Xmas Eve for those of us with young children.

People who freely choose to go to the odd games as they please are unaffected, as they will simply choose not to go to this one.

However as a season ticket holder, I have committed to pre-purchase a ticket to a game which has now moved to a day which causes massive ball ache.

Rest assured that this is not about you.

It’s ALL fans that they hate.

I ****ing hate football.

Initially there was a suggestion the Everton game would also get moved on a day. Guess that’s not the case.
Means we play our 3 Christmas games in a shorter period than most other teams.
Will give Everton a slight advantage in that game….

So now our supporters trust are trying to get the game played on the Saturday at 8pm.

I can't think of anything worse

Supporters Trusts ignored by PL shock!

Noticed Man City are playing in the World Club Championships that weekend now, so Brentford have Christmas off before we go there on the 27th. Eat plenty of turkey lads.

Why does he assume he’s talking for every fan?

The point is that people who go to matches go, they don’t think oh I won’t go to this one it’s on TV. Those of us who have other commitments on this day no longer have the choice to go.

They do have a choice though they may not want to but the choice is there.

And the point is that folks are moaning because they have got to spend time with their family instead of going to watch a game of football. It’s all about perspective.
