It certainly seems the big number 9 that we all know and love is definitely back in fashion and the future for most teams. After years of faffy forwards being the way the big no9 is returning and fully effective.

So with that in mind might it be a shrewd move to find out the numbers of all those scouts described as "dinosaurs" and get them looking through the lower divisions for all the best old fashioned no9s that haven't been turned into centre halves?

The issue we have is that we only have Traore and Bueno who put any crosses in as our wide forwards are now inverted.

We need a last man style forward, regardless of size, who can fashion chances in tight areas and has the instinct to be around the ball when it breaks to us.

I think, we need sombody who can be a Target man but isn't just a lump. Needs to be able to play a bit too. Basically the old Raul/Giroud type would be ideal.

But if we can't get that, just having sombody that can win headers and get onto the end of crosses would help, even having a slightly smaller forward that can play back to goal a bit.

Trouble is with Adama crosses. They can go anywhere. I got closer than our forwards to his cross against Liverpool in the week and I was in the southbank

We need a goalscorer. Someone in form who is scoring goals already ideally.

If you look at Europe's top scorers, we aren't getting any of the best.

If Osimhen left Napoli it would be for a top club.

Moffi and Jonathan David are on 12. I'd love either, but Moffi is seemingly off to West Ham.

Ben Yedder and Fullkrug are on 11, both would be great signings.

Embolo, Joselu and Marcus Thuram are on 10, all would probably improve us.

Sadly, I don't think any of the above would be available.

So the point has be lost on some, football is in cycles, the forward/false 9 era is at/coming to an end. The big strong n09 is coming back, centre halves these days arent really schooled on how to deal with them properly so get in early on this.

So are there players further down the league who due to the unfashionable nature of the big no9 not being picked up and could do a job further up the league?

I think you would only look at the Championship if you look for a lower League striker.

Akpom of Middlesbrough has scored 13 in 21 games, Gyokeres of Coventry has scored 12 in 27, Estupinan of Hull has scored 12 in 25, Ndiaye of Sheff United has scored 10 in 28 and Brereton-Diaz of Blackburn has scored 9 in 27. There are others like Pukki of Norwich and Stewart of Sunderland.

None of our strikers, experienced as they are, can score goals. Most of those names mentioned have scored more than our lot put together. I know it’s the Championship, but Akpom has a 61% scoring record in the matches he’s played.

There could be some surprise packages in the Championship, who probably wouldn’t cost as much as a foreign import and can hit the ground running.

We have to do something in this transfer window. We scored 38 goals in 38 games last season and have 12 in 20 this season. It’s not as if scoring has been a recent problem, it’s been going on for 58 matches!

Our fans, sports commentators, pundits and opposition supporters always talk about us needing a striker. Let’s get one from the Championship before 31st January!

Probably take only gyokeres out of those, and bereton seems likely to sign a pre contract with Villarreal

Put this on the Transfer window thread…..

Just had a random thought…we are blatantly in need of a centre forward and a presence in the box…could there be a possibility that with Fabio going to PSV we take Luuk De Jong in exchange as part of the deal?…JL had him at Sevilla….just a thought and could explain Fabio going to PSV as a sweetener….?

If we can't find a "sure thing" then IMO we should just take a punt on Gyokeres. If the worst happens and we go down, at least we have a proven Championship scorer. If he plays well and scores goals to keep us up, great. If he doesn't make it in the Prem but we stay up, we probably get close to our money back from a promotion-chasing Championship side next season.

The lad at Dnipro, Dovbyk, is interesting. 40 goals and 10 assists in 67 appearances since 20/21 season. 11 in 14 league games this season. 6 goals in 14 international appearances. He scored in Euro 2020 vs Sweden last 16, against Scotland in World Cup Qualifier Semi Finals and vs Ireland in that Europa cup thing. He’s 1.89m (6’2’’) and is a unit and has only played Centre Forward. Seems to be able to play back to goal as well. Might be rubbish and playing in a rubbish league but looking at the list available there aren’t many that I think are great and we can afford/get.

Saw a very good article about this. Basically crossing died a death years ago and as a result of that + wanting to play out from the back CBs have become naturally smaller and less physical (basically footballers who would have become midfielders in another era).

Another issue is that we really need mobility up front. Raul was perfect as he could do everything we required but if we are looking at a big man who can turn players, run the channels, hold the ball up and dribble then we are competing with top, top clubs for these players.

We bought one, he stumbled around for 40 mins, did his ACL, then played on for 5 minutes.
Which is why we should've been all over Chris Wood. A loan until the end of the season, giving Kaladzjic time to recover for next season, would have been very smooth.

Reading all this and remembering the hoots of derision on here about Keiffer Moore a year or 2 back makes me laugh. What goes around comes around. I think we've spent our dosh on CFs and JL will have to come up with another way of scoring goals to keep us up.
