Wow. What a shocker. One of the few bars I like in Wolverhampton. Won an award only last year I think. What has happened here?
Late last year I went to the darts final at the civic, walked the others to Slaters and it was closed. This was on a Sunday afternoon with a lot of people out for a gallon before the evening session, well, final.

That’s a real shame. Great beer and service. I’ve never had to queue longer than a minute and easier to get into and find a standing space than other places in the area.

Having said that I only ever have one pint in there on my pre-game crawl and never after a game as the vibe’s different then and I’m half cut so prefer somewhere quieter and not so brightly lit :D

Whoa, wash yer mouth out with Special Brew! Carling is nasty **** but Banks's is a proper beer, just one which hasn't been branded to appeal to today's market. It always tickles me that here down south it's the only ale at £1 a bottle in the supermarket and there are loads of average ales in matte-finish tins called things like Shoreditch **** Head with a Navy tattoo as their ****y logo priced £2+. I'd actually really like to see some (not all) self-declared, recently converted ale connoisseurs try a blind taste test, they'd be embarrassed by the results I've little doubt.
89p in the Asda near where I work

No where in Wolverhampton is barely away fan friendly either, we just gonna keep turning 3000 away fans down each week in the Prem? I was up in Newcastle for a few years and they completely embrace the match day experience, strippers, songs, fan games the lot.
I was there last season for the league game and agree it's an amazing place for away fans. All the pubs in the city centre were away friendly but without it feeling like a soft town we were taking over (like when we go to Watford and Fulham). The concourse was actually a nice place for a beer too, with views across the back of the town. We stayed the night and the Tyne Bar might just be my favourite pub!

Wolverhampton is not Newcastle though. Never has been and never will be. Its a good honest working class Midlands town not a regional centre full of beautiful Georgian buildings and a river running through its centre. Any comparisons are at least moot and definitely unfair. I do agree though that a couple of pubs should be opened up to away ****ers.

If they can eventually get the Civic Hall opened again that place would be a great venue pre-match, give Sam Jacks a run for its money!

Haha, I love this forum. And I like Heineken and Doombar. Does that make me bi? Or a double agent?
Sorry both **** mass produced rubbish. Slaters sold first rate beer. I defy anybody not to think Haka is a class pint. And well priced. As someone who comes up from Cambridge and always went to Slaters you lot don't know how lucky you were.

*******s mate. Doombar is a decent pint, nothing fancy but being mass produced doesn't necessarily render it rubbish. Some of the Midlands ales deserve to be more widely available though: UBU is decent, the Saddlers stout is nice and Purity make a nice ale.

Sorry but Doombar is crap since Anhauser Buch bought it to pretend they are part of the craft ale movement. Purity is UBU. It's such a shame that the beer inside Molineux is such utter crap and I include Bank's in a tin in that. Microbreweries and small local brewers are the only sector in the beer market still growing and not all their customers are bearded posers. Wake up and smell the hops man

I'm a socialist so always keen to stick one in on multinational crap. But it tastes the same to me? Have they changed the recipe then? I don't want to be seen as a Doombar fan, I just think it's an okay beer tis all - available down here in the ****ty South and when it's regularly piped through tends to be okay?

The old sports bar under Atlantis was always good and if resurrected could have that match day pre-match music and dancing girls thing going on.

What is that bit of the building now out of interest? I never venture to that part of town anymore.
Was that Heros? Used to go there, pound a pint on Tuesday games.

Yeah, I think it's still 90p in Tesco in Southend but I rounded up. Decent tipple.
Banks’s isn’t the best but, as you say, decent. Especially at 90p so I always have a few in my beer cupboard.

Most importantly though, sat at home with a Banks’s instantly transports me “home”.

There have been a few new bars open up in Wolverhampton in the last couple of years such as Slaters, Grainstore, Bohemians. Was hoping we might eventually get back to the glory days of the late 90's and early noughties. No such luck. Wolvo nightlife is in tatters.
Grainstore has been there ages now

I can see why people are upset that it's shutting...
Kind of moving away from Wolvo I got on the wrong bus back Saturday which terminated in Bloxwich. I went in the local there and it was Carling on almost every tap. I agree the majority love it but just having one or 2 other options is a much better idea.

It's why I love Hogs. Have a variety for the masses but then throw other stuff in if your feeling fancy/adventurous. Just having Carling bores the hell out of me it really does. Just the pub knowing what will sell I guess.

Bonks's is a decent 'golden ale'. I'm not suggesting it's amazing just that it's a solid ale and a tasty one at that so to dismiss it in the same breath as nasty lagers is simply saft.

Go to the Turf next time. It's considered one of the last traditional mid terrace victorian pubs in England.

Shows how much I know. I always thought it was fairly new for some reason. Been there a few times in recent years. Wolverhampton nightlife nowhere near as good as it was in late 90's and early noughties. A real shame.

Same here, they do say variety is the spice of life. But keep the jaeger bombs away from me please...

Loved Slaters - exuse to get away from the usual **** serving Carling / Banks' and have proper beer.

Nice atmosphere there too - real shame.
As a camra member, craft ale isn't proper beer. As a beer drinker, I do not care as long as it tastes nice. But, yea, craft ay proper cause its dead pasteurised crap with no "still alive" yeast in it.... and is aimed and people with no socks and **** beards who vape a lot that think craft means real.

Anyone heard that the old little civic bar may be opening again under new ownership? Used to go there before games a few years back.

Aye, it's called 'The Hummingbird' - opening in late April

Gutted as it was our pre-match watering hole. Bar staff terrific you were never more than a couple of minutes getting served. Top beers especially Haka or Top Totty.

This in spades, gutted. Oh well Great Western it is...o_O
