It sounds as though Toti Gomes is doing very well in Switzerland and Sanderson was motm for Sunderland at the weekend. Could one or both of these save us a big outlay in the summer or do we need to try to sign the finished article? Discuss?

I think we still need to look at some who is more the finished article, especially if going to a back 4.

No harm in looking at these 2 in pre season though but you've seen what top cbs can do for a team (Dias at City, VVD at Liverpool)

We need a big signing at centre back... Its a area we haven't recruited at really since we was promoted... Back 4 needs to be an option as well... Age isn't a factor.. Plenty of centre backs around Europe who are young but have still played a lot of football.. Benoit badishille for example... If we only make one marquee signing in the summer for me it needs to be a centre back...

I'd be happy to see either of them around the squad, but I do think we need to spend on an established quality CB. The difference that someone like Dias would make is staggering

If it were a toss-up, I'd rather see money spent on a midfielder who compliments Neves and replaces the ailing legs of Tino, legend that he is. So, for me, let's see what the lads coming through can do. Wouldn't it be great to bring through some of our own talent.

Gomes is a bit young, but would love to see Sanderson get a chance next term.

Incidentally, do you set exam questions?
I asked Pagey same question but he got the hump.

If they didn't play for us would you be happy if we signed them in the summer? If so, why? If not, also why?

I’d love to see Sanderson and Giles involved in the squad next season but it’ll only happen if Nuno thinks they’re ready and good enough.

I keep hearing the term go out and get a world class cb or a top talent who would posters think is top talent?

Dias obviously but was always destined to a bigger club

Gomes is older than Sanderson.

For what's its worth, I doubt either of them will be near the quality required to start regularly currently. The level both are playing at in comparison is very poor but defenders do develop later.

I wouldn't say that Gomes is young at 22 as much as he has hardly played any games in his career according to wiki.

Ruben Diaas went to City as that's obviously the level we had to be at to get him, so any other ready made 'World Class' CB's will pose the same problem to us... the likes of Upamecano or Koulibily etc. These players won't come to us at our current level, and we need that level of ability to justify the expense and to be better than the very good players we have already

Which is why, for me, we have to spend big again on a younger player who will be as good as a Ruben Dias... I'm excited that Badiashile is that level, and could be got a decent price with the issues in the French league...

I believe in our youth policy and I think we can take the club forward by doing this again here, but the quality of the scouting and recruitment is obviously going to be key, and I think this lad could be the one we've been tracking

Impressing in League 1 or lower Championship is great, but anyone thinking that Sanderson and Giles are going to suddenly become first choices in a team chasing top half of the PL, and hopefully higher, is kidding themselves. Still time for them to improve and I'm not writing them off yet but those that make the step up to the PL are generally stand out players like Bowen, Madison, Eze and Watkins.

Dias was there for us a full season before he signed for city. We wouldn't stump the dough.

Kilman has done alright making the step up.

Stand corrected. Mind everyone looks young at the moment. Must be getting old.

It’s such a difficult position to make that step up. There’s not a huge amount of U23s that breakthrough to play regularly for a Premier League side at centre back, and if they do, they are usually incredibly talented.

For those good players that are still talented, but not at the very top level, centre back is probably second only to Goalkeeper as a position you need real game time and experience to become as reliable as you need to be. Sanderson and Gomes won’t get that here.

I think the next stage for Sanderson and Gomes would be loans to good Championship sides, where they will be playing every game at centre back.

60m players were out of our depth financially with FFP.......... The whole club only 30m a few years before...

So why were we even negotiating in the first place. From memory we were trying to get a deal done with installments and add ons but wouldn't stump it up front. Either way it's the same from ffp perspective.

Thats kinda what I'm saying, get the Ruben Dias when we can get the Ruben Dias... or pay what he was worth at that time (as we maybe should have done a couple of years ago, if we could) and then when he actually did move it's to City and out of our reach at that time

Someone like Badiashile is in our reach now, maybe out of our reach in a couple of years

He's been with us nearly 3 years and made 18 appearances. He's been ok, nothing more. The fact so many want to see a new CH brought in tells me he isn't the answer.
I think that’s a bit unfair. I think he’s done better than ok. Fans will always want more though won’t they. I do think we could do with another experienced specialised centre back (not a midfielder playing there) but I would also like the younger players to be given opportunities otherwise the youth set up becomes purely a process to develop and sell players on. Difficult balance as you can’t hide too much in that position.

We was but not for the release clause which was 56m if memory was right.... Ww was testing the water to see if benfeca needed the money..... Ya gotta bear in mind that at that time the club books only showed 1 season of premiership income....

Ahh agreed. I haven't seen loads of badiashile, like what I have seen. What's not to like, huge, quick good on the ball.

Thing is, to balance the books from that you'd need to make10m worth of sales. Quite easily done I'd say, or just not sign Cutrone.

We already sold cav n Costa etc to try to balance the books.. Our summer spending pre europa cup season was hampered by FFP....... And we are still under restrictions... Hopefully we break even this summer thet will be gone... Dias wasn't possible with the books.......

Kilman just looks a bit cumbersome and slow. He'll make a career at a decent level but i doubt it will be top half of the PL.

Surely how the deals are structured are more important than the initial value - just assuming - might be wrong..

The example would be how Liverpool structured the payments for Jota.

Payment 1: a pack of Wotsits etc..

The release clause for ruben dias that summer was 56m.......to be paid in FULL.... That's was the only deal available.

We hadn't. They were both loaned, money didn't hit for ffp until the season after.

Think you've mentioned the wrong poster mate. I remember reading it and actually liked the post ;)
