I started off wondering what money we made from the FA Cup, so I have done a bit of research to estimate what I think our cup run has made the club. As the figures for the premier league are also published I thought I would add them too.

Some estimates, but I don't think they are far off :)

Wolves Income 2018-19 From Premier League TV

Actual league position: 7th
Matches televised: 15
TV income: £17.9million
Prize money: £26.6million
Equal share: £79.4million
Total: £123.9million

Wolves Income FA Cup Run - Prize Money
Third Round Proper winners (32) £135,000
Fourth Round Proper winners (16) £180,000
Fifth Round Proper winners (8) £360,000
Quarter-Final winners (4) £720,000
Semi-Final losers (2) £900,000
Total £2.295m

FA Cup TV Income

5th Round - Bristol (A) £144,000
6th Round - Man United (H) £247,500
Semi-Final - Watford £247,500
Total FA Cup TV Money £495,144

Gate Share (45% share for each club, 10% to the FA)

Estimate based on £28 Average Ticket Price (£50 average for Semi-final)

3rd Round - Liverpool Home - 25,849 x £28 = £723,772 (£325,697)
4th Round - Shrewsbury Away - 9,503 x £28 = £266,084 (£119,737)
4th Round R - Shrewsbury Home - 28,844 x £28 = £807,632 (£363,434)
5th Round - Bristol Away - 24,394 x £28 = £683,032 (£307,364)
6th Round - Man United Home - 31,004 = £868,112 (390,650)
Semi - Watford - 80,092 x £50 = £4,004,600 (£1,802,070)
Total 45% Share of Gate Recipts = £3,308,952

Total Estimated FA Cup Run = £6,099,096

Premier League TV plus FA Cup run income = £130m

Clubs keep 100% home gate receipts in Premier league
Wolves Home Average = 31,030 x 19 Games = 589,572
589,572 x £28 = £16,508,016

TV + FA Cup + Attendance Income = £146.5m

Add in commercial Revenue & Sponsorships we must be making close to £155m this season

The Europa league pays 240,000 euros for the second qualifying round, 280,000 for third qualifying round - then 2.92m euros for the group stage. The winners would get somewhere in the region of 13m Euros just from the prize pot.

I have pulled this together for my own interest, more than happy for everyone to make their own estimates :)

Great post, think your home gate income needs an adjustment. When you consider 22.5k are season ticket holders paying around £23-£27 a ticket, and then there are lots of kids, pensioners etc. I expect our matchday ticket revenue is significantly below the £16m

I'm pretty sure that the participants get much less than 45% each of the gate money for FA Cup semi-finals.

I found the following:
"In the FA Cup Semi Final, 5.5% of the net gate receipts fees is given directly to the FA, for distribution to affiliated associations at their discretion. A payment is also made to the stadium owner where the match is played (currently Wembley). Of the remainder, after payment to the stadium provider:

  • 25% is given to the FA;
  • 65% is to be shared between clubs (32.5% each); and
  • 10% goes to the pool."
FA Cup Prize Money - How Much Can Your Club Get ? - FINANCIAL FOOTBALL NEWS

Interestingly the same link suggests that the finalists get none of the gate money.....

The link you posted suggests that between the 3rd and 6th round they clubs do get 45% each, but you are right about the semi-final

Dunno how you arrived to ticket average of £28, would think with concessions, different child age groups, disabled and season tickets, would probably be mid teens

That's pretty much where I think we'll be, somewhere between £150m-£160m. Maybe a bit less from gate receipts and more from sponsorship etc (we don't know what magical deals they've done!). So getting in amongst it as far as 'best of the rest' is concerned (Everton £189m, West Ham £175m, Leicester £159m). And yet these huge numbers are only about half of what the lowest of the big six rakes in!

Whatever the final figures are for 2018/19 (£140m/160m) they are very different to any in the past. Given the organisational stability of the present we have every reason to look forward to happier days than we have known for 50/60years. It's been a great year, the summer might be a scorcher and next season is already beckoning. Can't be bad!
ps Will forgive any guesswork errors, no doubt the Fosun accountants might make a few as well ;)

Just a small point but if I remember correctly the 3rd FA Cup tie against Liverpool was also shown live by BBC therfore increasing the FA Cup TV revenue.

thanks for the analysis. Sounds like the europa won't make us any money unless we go far, given the need to expand the squad, appearance payments travel etc.

The PL, CL and associated commercial income is where its at.

Exactly right. Leicester took £159m in 17/18, in 16/17 when they got to the CL quarter final, £233m

Pretty sure the club are expecting a turnover of £150 million, so between 150 and 170 feels right, I think the big boys are getting between 300 and 350, there’s a gulf to close.

I once overheard someone saying basically Champions league pretty much doubles up your premier league money. Would this be a fair assessment of the amount a club can earn from Champions League?

Cash is all results dependent. Depends on where you finish in Prem and how far you get in Champs League.

So say liverpool finished second in premier league and finish second in champions league, they would 'roughly' double there money if they only finished second in the premier league but weren't in the champions league?

The big boys start closer to £400m, Man City pulled in over £500m last year, huge gulf.

It's not far off if you go deep into the competition

Leicester City earned more Champions League money than Real Madrid in 2016-17

And the numbers now are much bigger

How clubs' 2018/19 UEFA Champions League revenue will be shared

You can see why the clubs in there at the moment are trying to make it a closed shop. Too much at stake if you miss out for a few years.

I think the knock on effect of this will be a big increase in status, sponsorship and revenues from the Europa League and UEFA's 3rd European Competition (due in 2021). We've already seen the coverage move up in quality from the Channel 5 days!

You'll have clubs with huge European pedigrees such as Man Utd and Milan playing Europa League football most seasons. With that comes marketing opportunity.
