West Ham United vs Liverpool predictions

They couldn’t, could they?

Liverpool are not dead yet in the race for the top four. Back-to-back victories over Leeds United and Nottingham Forest have kept Jurgen Klopp’s side in contention (just about) for Champions League qualification as we prepare to enter the final month of the season.

Another win here could see some of the teams above the Reds get nervous, not least the Premier League’s current crisis club, Tottenham Hotspur.

It is worth noting, though, that Liverpool have not triumphed in three successive matches since the turn of the year.

Consistency has eluded them throughout this campaign and it would not be a huge shock if they came unstuck at the London Stadium on Wednesday.

Jurgen Klopp will no doubt tell his players that the rest of 2022/23 is in effect a free hit. It looked like Liverpool’s chances of a top-four finish were already over. That should allow them to play with greater freedom than if they had recently dropped out of the qualification spots.

Even so, a nine-point deficit will not be easily overturned. Manchester United have also played a game fewer than their arch-rivals, although Liverpool have a game in hand on third-placed Newcastle, whom they also trail by nine points.

West Ham will look to make life difficult for Klopp’s men, but Liverpool should be able to get the job done.

West Ham United vs Liverpool betting tips

West Ham need the points for reasons of their own, but Liverpool’s attacking talent could make the difference.

Liverpool to win – 17/20 (bet365)

Liverpool have rediscovered their form ahead of the run-in, but so too have West Ham.

Their most memorable Premier League result of late was the 5-1 thrashing by Newcastle United earlier this month. But that was in fact an aberration.

Indeed, that demolition at the London Stadium was the Hammers’ sole defeat in their last six top-flight outings.

In that time they have beaten Southampton, Fulham and Bournemouth. David Moyes also oversaw a pair of battling performances as West Ham drew with in-form Aston Villa and title contenders Arsenal, both on home turf.

They are not out of the woods yet. West Ham have amassed a six-point buffer above the bottom three, but they require another couple of victories to be sure of survival.

It is increasingly difficult to see them dropping into the Championship, however. In truth, Moyes’ men should never have been involved in a basement battle in the first place.

The quicker they guarantee their top-flight status, the better. West Ham are gunning for glory in the Europa Conference League, a tournament they would no doubt like to dedicate their full attention to by the time the semi-finals roll around.

But this could be a bridge too far for the east Londoners, who have lost 10 of their last 12 meetings with Liverpool.

Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals – 20/21 (bet365)

On Saturday West Ham scored four goals in a game for only the second time this season. Their attacking play against Bournemouth was superb, allowing Moyes’ side to pull further clear of the bottom three.

Liverpool have also rediscovered their verve in forward areas. Klopp has – for the time being at least – settled on a front three of Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota, all of whom are working well together.

More significantly, Trent Alexander-Arnold is thriving in a hybrid role which sees him move from right-back to central midfield when his team have the ball.

The England international’s creativity is to the fore and Liverpool have benefited immensely in their recent encounters.

Liverpool have scored 11 times in their last three outings. They have notched two or more goals in seven of their last 11 Premier League contests.

Despite a 6-1 shellacking of Leeds a week or so ago, the main question mark concerns Liverpool’s away record. But the emphatic scoreline at Elland Road will have boosted their belief ahead of this trip to the capital.

Back both teams to score and over 2.5 goals at 20/21 with bet365

Diogo Jota to score any time – 7/4 (bet365)

Prior to his first goal in the triumph over Leeds, the aforementioned Jota had gone over a year without scoring for his club in any competition.

Liverpool’s problems this term have been multi-faceted, but having a fully fit Jota available throughout the entire campaign would surely have helped them to better cope with the loss of Sadio Mane.

The Portugal international heads into Wednesday’s game having notched braces against both Leeds and Nottingham Forest.

Klopp was full of praise for the former Wolves forward after the latter match, and it is safe to say Jota will again be included in the manager’s starting line-up to face West Ham.

“That makes him for us so valuable,” Klopp said in his post-match press conference. “A long, long time he was out, and now having these positive things.”

The bookies consider Salah to be the most likely goalscorer in this game, but backing Jota brings better value.

The Portuguese is in fantastic form and he can find the back of the net for a third game on the bounce.
