The Athletic send me their e-mail every morning - like a good many of you, I suspect. This morning there's a story about snus - which I had simply never heard of.

Here's the e-mail for those of you that don't get it. Not behind the paywall, altho' the rest of the story is:

It’s the live match on television. Aston Villa are taking on Arsenal in front of a global audience of millions. The home team are heading towards a 4-2 defeat and, when the camera pans to Unai Emery, Villa's manager, your eyes are drawn to the player in the dugout behind him.

These are the moments when Bertrand Traore, one of Villa’s substitutes, can be seen lifting up his top lip before appearing to place something alongside his gum. Aware that the footage has circulated on social media, Traore denies it was snus.

Rewind eight months and another scene from England’s top division: this time it’s Newcastle United versus Liverpool. Mark Gillespie, Newcastle’s third-choice goalkeeper, might not realise the television cameras are on him. He is sitting in the stand, inserting something beneath his lip, in a scene that is being replicated in dressing rooms up and down the country. Newcastle's approach is that they see it as a personal decision.

Aston Villa's Bertrand Traore (left) and Newcastle's Mark Gillespie were both seen appearing to place something in their mouths during recent Premier League games

Snus is a tobacco product that comes in small parcels, similar to a teabag sachet, and is placed alongside the gum to release nicotine into the bloodstream. Users talk of it giving them a calming effect and a sense of well-being. Stronger variants can involve a physical spark, which many footballers clearly feel is advantageous when the sport has never been quicker than it is now.

Lee Johnson, a manager who has seen its effects close-up, has told The Athletic that from his experiences he estimates 35 to 40 per cent of players are taking snus. If anything, he says, the numbers are probably higher. They just don’t want you to know about it.

“It’s a bit of a taboo subject; nobody is talking about it,” says Johnson, the manager of Hibernian and, before that, Sunderland, Bristol City, Barnsley and Oldham Athletic. “But it has become a culture. It’s getting worse and we need to educate these lads because it’s highly addictive. I don’t feel they understand the true threat of it over the long term.”

Today, an investigation by The Athletic reveals:

■ One high-profile England international is “fully reliant (on snus)... rarely seen without one under his gum".
■ Another big-name Premier League player weaned himself off snus after a long period of struggling for form.
■ Players at a League One club have been selling snus to 13- and 14-year-olds in the academy.
■ One player at a League Two club had “a bit of cancer cut out of his gum” because of heavy use.
■ The Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) is to undertake a research study as part of a new campaign, starting this summer, to warn players of the potential risks.

I’ve not heard of snus but I remember seeing adverts for tobacco “pouches” that you placed against your gum. I remember that they were quite controversial because they caused the sort of gum tumours mentioned in your email. I could have sworn that they were banned but it seems very similar to this “snus” so perhaps not… it’s a while ago so my memory might be failing me.

It’s apparently tobacco-less which I suppose would allow people to justify their use of it to themselves and would certainly overcome any cultural/religious taboos on tobacco… but it does contain nicotine! That it’s being (reputedly) used in the game to (reputedly) give a calming effect probably merits looking into but I would imagine that users might claim it’s no different to energy drinks. That it’s (reputedly) being sold to kids is a bit more worrying

Thanks for posting, that’s shone a light on something that I’d no idea existed!

EDIT: just searched for Snus and, yes, it looks like exactly the same sort of thing as I remember.

Here’s the brand that I remember being advertised on TV as a kid.

A few years ago I met a lot of Swedish and Danish Wolves fans in Copenhagen and these were really popular over there.

They use them a lot here in Norway. At least it's in a pouch now, I hated to see it when they pushed the loose snus under their top lip and the juice started to run from the side of their mouth, especially the young girls. I think most use snus instead of smoking.

I guess it is similar to chewing tobacco?
Quite popular in the US, particularly in the south, I think.
And I think that Skoal Bandits (referenced above) are from the US? Used to be quite a major sponsor of motorsport inc NASCAR and F1 RAM team)

I had never heard of Snus until I read that article. If it’s not a banned substance then I don’t suppose much can be done about it.

Its currently at epidemic status amongst older teenagers in Denmark.

The patches are flavoured to taste like sweets.

Each patch gives an estimated nicotin hit of 4-5 cigarettes. In other words an enormous
nicotin hit.

Cancers and gum disease are already appearing, even th ought the patches have only
been on the mass market for a couple of years.

Experts warn of raised blood pressure and cardiovascular problems in the near future.

In my view, the companies are criminal enterprises, selling a known poison to young people.

It's probably that it will be banned, if the current discussion here is an indication.

I remember skoal bandits from the 1980's, we used to buy them for a joke...never saw the attraction.
We used to prefer snuff, gave more a kick and made your eyes water.
We were about 16.

that is mental for 2023.
The only property of nicotine is that it makes you want more of it, if you've never had it you don't miss it because it does nothing for you, so the whole problem is the addiction and the thousand other toxins mixed in with it that cause the cancers, just to get back to the non-agitated situation you were in in the first place? And they flavour it like sweets? Why not just have a sweet?

Far better off just taking cocaine and be done with it.

I guess if you inhale nicotine and vapour it's better than burning nicotine with all the other toxins and tars, so useful to come off it by downdosing. Nicotine is not dangerous in the absolute minute quantities in cigarettes, but the risk is with mixing your own you can easily make it stronger.

I know one person who uses snus and one ex-PL professional footballer who still plays in the Championship. Funnily enough, they are one and the same person.

It seems to be rife in professional football in Scotland and England. My friend used to complain about her ex using it. He starting using it when he joined Burnley as a 20/21 year old - around 15 years ago, -and was using it regularly when she was going out with him around 6-7 years ago.

Wasn’t Vardy (and many others) using this years ago?

I’m sure there was a brief bit of fuss as he’d used it whilst playing for England.

A Scandinavian thing indeed... When I was young in the 90's I sometimes used it when boozing, l-a-a-a-a-te in the night. You got a Soft Upper Lip as a result when "deploying" it, and it enhanced your drunkenness for a while, until it started to drip down as a brown/black thick liquid on your upper front teeth.
This was obviously very much appreciated by the birds in the bar/restaurant, when politely asking for the last dance of the night...

Just to clarify: snus here in this discussion refers to a tobacco free chemical product that contains high amount of nicotine.

Conflicting evidence.
It looks the same as what the Americans call dip but in little bags.

There was a girl I knew in Louisiana who used it. At first I thought she had a weird tick where she'd push her tongue out behind her bottom lip (despite this, she was still really fit lol)...

After winning her over with my English charm she invited me for a weekend on her family's yacht. The dad was doing dip, her brothers and her sister in law too...

In an effort to impress the family I wanted to find out what all the fuss was about, so in went the Skoal (dip). It tasted awful, you have to keep spitting out fag flavoured brown saliva (the family were spitting in little plastic cups, I opted to spit over the side of the boat), it made me really dizzy and numbed my mouth...

Spitting over the side of the boat was a good move though, I was positioned well for the dip induced puke, which I'm sure impressed the whole family.

It's disgusting, I would implore everyone to avoid it. There are no upsides.

The contemporary snus is tobacco free.

As a swede,I´ve used snus for over 35 years now.
It sure does beats smoking, but it is not something I would start using today as a little bit wiser individual(hopefully)from that teenager I was back then.
It is huge in Sweden, has been for ages and ages..it is part of our culture I would say.
It is a substitute to smoking cigarettes, and it is nowhere as dangerous as smoking(says itselfs really..it cannot be good to inhale smoke).
It´s highly addictive and harder to stop than compared to smoking.
When travelling to England I always makes sure I bring enough of the stuff with me to last the time I´m in the UK.
Been used by swedish sportsmen for ages and ages,a mirror of the society they have grown up in.
Many, many footballers and icehockeyplayers have used it.No big thing at all over here.
It is a bad habit though.Nicotine isn´t good for you in any shape or form really..but it is nowhere as dangerous as smoking.

Worst bit was falling asleep with the "lose snus" still under the lip.
I´ve destroyed my fair share of pillows that way..:)
I´ve offered many an englishman to try the stuff.
Most kindly rejects the offer..those that do try it usually lasts five minutes before spitting it out..:)
I guess that first cigarette really didn´t taste good either.

There has been extentive research on snus here in Sweden.
It raises the blood pressure a bit,but other than that I do not think any real harm from using it has ever been proven...other than a slightly higher risk for cancer in (wait for google english word)pancreas.
Snus is as common in Sweden like Fish and Chips is in England.

Shows how naive I am as I thought that snus were those hat/scarf combos that were popular a while back. It’s been an education reading this thread! :D

It’s just a nicotine hit and same as being addicted to smoking. When I lived in Stockholm literally everyone did it and I used to to. The nicotine hit goes straight to your head via your gums similar to a drag on a ciggy or having a strong coffee. People sit in offices snus at their desks as we would drink a coffee or go out for a ciggy break.

The real die yards in Sweden will double bag, or even snus and have a ciggy at same time :0

So no risk apart from higher blood pressure and a greater chance of cancer....sounds like its harmless

Part of the packaging of tobacco free snuff, or nicotine oral patches, is that the risk factor
is much lower than smoking and, it is claimed, vaping.

But much is uncertain because of the lack of study and the relatively recent adoption of the habit on
a wider basis. Here in Denmar k, some medical experts have stepped forward to point out what they see
as the clear dangers, as well as looking at the impact of nicotine addiction on young people's mental state
and cognitive abilities.

That uncertainty is being used by the pusher companies to ensnare a mass market for their products.

The lead academic of the campaigns to raise public awareness of the marketing and impact of the patches
is Charlotta Pisinger, a heart specialist. This is her briefing paper on the subject:

which can be translated through Google. The paper is very hard-hitting, particularly on the impact on the teenage brain's development.

It is guarantued much safer than smoking cigarettes.
Like I said,we have used it here in Sweden since the dawn of time.
We do not have any more Cancer in this country compared to others.
In fact, when smoking was popular around the world,it seems the use of snus was the factor that enabled us to have lower cases.
Our snus is a tobacco product though..I cannot be sure of this other tobaccofree stuff.
Sounds crazy to me anyways..the tobacco taste is something one wants.
Snus without tobacco is like a pint of lager going stale.I find it to be a useless product.
Just put one snus in now..life´s good..:)

I’m sure I read Boly commented himself that what he is chewing most games was some kind of tobacco based energy product.

I could very well be wrong, but sure I read that.

It is the nicotine that is the drama queen.
It is highly toxic, and higly addictive.
Problem with smoking is the..smoke.Like anyone´s lungs going to like that ****.
You don´t smoke snus, you just put it under your lip and enjoy.
Yes,there´s tobacco in there..so what?
How much harm is that gonna do to your body?It is a natural product.
The nicotine makes you an addict.
That´s about it,really.
Yes,nicotine ain´t good for you and yes I wouldn´t be a user of snus as of today if stepping back in time.
This said,I am grateful for being a snuser instead for being a smoker. There is no comparsion regarding health issues between the two´s.
You just have to apply some common sense here really.

Next time in Wolvo,at moon or Lych..I will offer you some.
The pint of beer you drinking is more harmful.
Perspectives,people..perspectives.
