I know there was another identical thread some time ago but I've gone back 6 pages and can't find it. If anyone can merge threads please do.

I wasn't planning on going to this game but now I can, travelling up from Essex and meeting family. I've been to Shrewsbury a few times but never for the footie, at Gay Meadow or the lego ground. Where are the good ale pubs and the rowdy, away friendly drinking holes? Is there anywhere decent on the ground side of the town? Is there anywhere to avoid?

The Brooklands is close to the ground for sure. Ale is dire though ;)

Hole in the Wall is a decent boozer and opens at 9am, so the ideal place to start.

What are the pubs like on the way from the town centre? Probably nip into the Albion Vaults next to the train station first.

If I started drinking at 9 in the morning I would be good for nothing by 12. :p

I've worked in Shrewsbury for a while.

There's loads of nice places in the town centre, but less choice the further you get out to the football ground.

It's just over 2 miles walk from the station to the New Meadow.

I can't make it Saturday, but if it were me, I'd be doing the following.....
  • Have a couple by the Station. There's 2 choices, The Albion Vaults or The Bulls Head. It surely has to be the Bulls Head!!
  • Walk up Castle Street, past the library and left down St Mary's Street
  • Pop into Cromwells - nice place, no riff-raff!
  • Down the hill and left onto the Wyle Cop
  • A few in the Nags Head
  • Turn right at The Cornhouse restaurant and into the Hop & Friar
  • Carry on over the river via the footbridge and down Greyfriars Road onto Belle Vue Road
  • Pop in the Masonic Arms
  • Walk down Belle Vue Road towards Meole Brace
  • Have one in the Belle Vue Tavern on the way
  • Get to Meole Brace and go to McDonalds!!
  • Pop into the Brooklands for a few
  • Make my way to the ground
I have no idea if any of the above are 'friendly' or 'no go' for away fans. But it's Shrewsbury, so heavy tutting is about as bad as it will probably get.

For those going, enjoy!

Albion Vaults by the bus station is called "The Alb" and is now quite decent
If Cromwells is too posh, just before it on the right - The Loggerheads - olde world real ale!
Cornhouse isn't there any more, so if you've gone over the English Bridge you've gone the wrong way. Look for Hop and Friar
After the footbridge, Crown is on the right before heading up to the Masonic.
If you're desperate - The Grove - "beware - six fingers"
The Brooklands is now called "The Wild Pig"
I'm sure you'll all find your way.
If not doing the two mile crawl, stay in town and get the shuttle bus from the bus station. Not sure 2500 fans will fit on two double deckers though.

I think you omitted the final step....the one where you get a lift in a van with flashing lights, to a big white building and have your stomach pumped.

When did the Cornhouse shut down? I've walked that way recently and didn't notice!!
