Sadly, mentality means nothing if your body just isn't cut out for the stresses of physical sport. He's suffered 3 crucial ligament injuries which will put him out for 9-12 months at a time and on top of that 6 months out with a bone fracture, 4 months out with ankle ligaments and 4 months out with a shoulder dislocation and he's still only 26.

Over the last 6 years he's basically spent as many days injured as he has fit to play.

Incidentally, this is the same surgeon who Roger Johnson unsuccessfully tried to sue for the operation on his knee.

I mean, his body shape and type makes me rather suspect that he has some form of connective tissue disorder. Particularly when you consider his brother is a very normal height and shape, yet Sasa is 6’7’’ with very long thin limbs.

I have been given a vague diagnosis of ‘symptomatic hypermobility’, which is how they describe a connective tissue disorder when they can’t be ***** (or afford to keep throwing genetic tests around) to try and pin down exactly which one, as has one of my Sons so far that has a very similar body shape.
I’m getting increasing aches and pains in all joints, nothing ever quite feels stable…but it wasn’t anywhere near this bad in my mid-20s.

Just seems that elite conditioning and youth has managed to carry him this far, but structurally, at a cellular level, his joints aren’t going to be able to cope with the rigours of top level sport.
Which would be gutting for him if that’s the case.
There’s enough added strain on joints because of his height, but if CTD is part of the reason for his height, I can’t see how he’ll ever make a sustained recovery.

It’s an interesting theory, and I’m very familiar with CTD’s having been genetically screened for every one of them. He doesn’t have classic Marfan’s appearance, but there are many others which can’t be diagnosed without looking at limb flexibility, scans of internal organs, and other telltale signs.

Just looking at his height and build, I think it’s worth remembering that Sasa is of Serbian descent, and Serbians are some of the tallest people on earth. Of note, according to a study in the Lancet, people in Serbia and neighbouring countries are not especially susceptible to MSK disorders (despite their relative tallness), so just because he’s unusually tall doesn’t mean he’s necessarily prone to joint issues.

So an interesting theory, but probably best we don’t speculate given how little we know about him.

Interesting. The diagnosis I got was along the lines of - we don't know exactly what's wrong but your collagen is probably weird - no hyper mobility though, just chronic instability in wrists and ankles (and back - yay for me as I get older).

Problem is there's just nothing you can do about it beyond strengthening muscles - and in my case using tendon ops and external braces where ligaments can't do their job properly.

If sasa has anything like this then top level sport is just going to be too much. The long term risks are going to be pretty bad too.

In my case, it was something which happened to me when I was in my early 40’s, out of the blue, which was literally life or death. My aortic artery stretched to the point of dissection. Luckily I survived, but in trying to understand why it happened, given I had no family history or prior symptoms, then the doctors did a very thorough genetic screening of known markers, and when that drew a blank, participated in the 100,000 Genome Study, but that drew a blank too. My genome and what happened to me remains on file should they eventually find a genetic link.

If he’s fit for the new season then great. Maybe we could sell him after all

Like a new signing :)
Indeed . And with the lack of money we had last season, what's the betting he gets the big build up by Jeff before next season as a reason not to let the moths out of the wallet. I like Sasa he seems like a good guy, but I can see him ever being up to the rigours of the Premier league, he is just not built robustly enough.

Surprised he hasn't called it a day. Best wishes to the lad.
Being honest, when I started reading the tweet I half expected to see that he had.
Poor lad wasn't exactly blessed with pace anyway but after his 3rd ACL it'll be very difficult for him in any top league.

There's a very selfish and unpleasant bit of my brain saying it's a shame we aren't just claiming the insurance to put towards the Summer window. Still he's obviously a lovely guy and hopefully he gets himself fit enough to play as a pro again (even if it's not at our level), just seems sadly unlikely.

Yes seems the only solution but understandably he won’t want to go down that path
Even when if he gets fit I can’t see him being in Gary’s plans

Don't want to sound harsh, on a human level I wish him all the best, but if he'd arrived and stayed fit from day one, I still don't think he'd have been anything more than a bit part squad player.

True. Even when he scored in his cameo's early in the season it was straight back to the bench.

He's not mobile enough to play the high tempo game I think GON favours.
