The Italian had been told that his future would depend on how the side finished the season and, with City defeating West Bromwich Albion 4-0 and Norwich City 6-1 in their last two games, they are producing a strong showing and retain an outside chance of securing the Premier League title.

City are five points behind Manchester United, who host Everton at lunchtime before Mancini's men kick off at Wolverhampton Wanderers later in the day. Though Mancini, whose contract has one more season to run, said "at the moment I am concentrating on the last four games and after this we can talk about the future", he added he was not worried about his long-term prospects at the club. "I am confident that I will continue to do this job next year. I don't think we have any problems because I think we have done a good job and we have to play another four games," he said.

After leading the Premier League for nearly seven months City now face losing out on the title, and Mancini was asked if he could identify where the side's challenge had faltered. "We have no problem with the players but we had players injured until four weeks ago," he said, before stating that some refereeing decisions had gone against the team. "I didn't like some decisions in the last two months."

He denied, though, that City's failure to strengthen in the January transfer window was an issue. "No, I think there are some moments every year that will be difficult moments, like we had Kompany, Lescott, Agüero, we had all of those injured at the same moment [in recent weeks]. We had a problem with this."

United have also suffered from injuries to key players this season, apparently with less detrimental effects. "But United have more players and different moments of injuries but every team has injuries," said Mancini. "When you have important players injured at key moments [it is difficult]."

If City defeat Wolves and then United in the 162nd Manchester derby on Monday week the points deficit would be cut to two, but Mancini maintained his public stance that the title is beyond City. "We have four games that are very difficult [remaining] and United have three, well four because one is against us, so three easy games. For this reason I think that we don't have a chance," he added.

Roberto Mancini

Manchester City

Jamie Jackson

guardian.co.uk © 2012 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies.
