Ricky Hatton noticed a worrying sign for Anthony Joshua which could have serious repercussions in his rematch with Oleksandr Usyk.

The Brit was outfoxed by the smaller man as he lost his WBA, WBO and IBF world heavyweight titles at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last Saturday.

It was always a risky move to take on the undefeated Ukrainian superstar, but the gamble backfired and Joshua must chase Usyk again – just as he did in the fight itself.

The defeat effectively ended the chances of seeing Joshua fight British rival Tyson Fury for at least another 12 months, with ‘The Gypsy King’ set to face Deontay Wilder for a third time on Ocotber 9, live on talkSPORT.

And Hatton believes it will be an arduous task for Joshua to reclaim his belts, especially considering he believes Usyk only ‘put his foot down’ in the final round.

Hatton wrote in his column for the Metro: “He (Usyk) maintained it from start to finish and I think in the last round when he put his foot on the gas, he was saying to AJ: ‘This still isn’t my best. I’ve still got some more to come here.

“It was a bit of a warning there for AJ for this rematch. ‘Look what I can really do when I put my foot down.’ Which is a very worrying sign for AJ.”

Indeed, it was the 31-year-old from Watford who was slumped on the ropes on Saturday evening as the final bell rang before the judges confirmed he had relinquished his titles.

Hatton, who helped prepare Fury for his first fight with Wilder, believes the 33-year-old will be upset at the way the fight transpired – but not deterred from his task.

“I think Tyson will be a bit surprised but not shocked with what happened,” Hatton said. “I think we all knew that anything could have happened that night. They were both capable of knocking each other out and outpointing each other.

“Because we all wanted the AJ vs Fury fight next, we were all a bit disappointed when Usyk won but ultimately, Tyson will be sat there now saying fair play to Usyk. You have to give the credit to him.

“How can anyone sit back and not say anything other than what a performance from Usyk.

“And privately, Tyson will be doing the same.”
