We, and the other 17, now know that a paltry 29 points guaranteed survival.
Wolves therefore stayed up by beating Southampton way back on 14 February.
The 3 relegated sides now know that they would have needed 40 points to survive, so when was their cause ultimately a fruitless one?...
- Well, even though they didn't know it until their loss at Molineux, the Blades were actually toast two games earlier when they lost to Leeds (3 April);
- Fulham could actually have saved themselves as late as this month, but losing at Chelsea on 1 May made the 40 point mark impossible;
- West Brom still had hope after 1 May - unlike Fulham because the TV picks - to still reach the magic 40 points mark but they simply could not afford to lose their Monday evening game on 3 May or 40 points were be impossible and, as we now know, relegation a certainly... alas, for Big Sam's brave battlers they didn't win on 3 May and so were down at FT as they could only achieve a maximum of 39 pts - opposition, just for the record, who denied them the 40 points were Wolves. That's all folks.
