I think when you realised you were a bit lost for words, you should have stopped right there, and not followed it up with that strange analogy about cats :D That would only work if you dressed up as a cat, and if you did, I suspect other cats might be the least of your problems.

I think they maybe crossed a line by blacking up, that goes a bit beyond enjoying a culture by having fun with it and is maybe a bit personal & demeaning. I'm sure they meant no harm, they should probably just apologise and that be an end of it.

One of my best friends is "coloured" and she gets very embarrassed by anything like this, thinks it's ludicrous to even suggest it's rascist !

Racism is a economy, in America Jesse Jackson is worth $10m, Al Sharpton $5m, they whip the little man on the street into a frenzy, people who have nothing, and they keep them protesting and rioting so that they can keep the money rolling in. If people like that genuinely cared about black people they would give all the money (barring enough to lead a modest life) to the people they want to supposedly help. It is a multi billion economy around the world and never trust a multi millionaire activist or groups like the society for black laywers, they are after money not to bring a end to racism.

A extreme example in reply, but stories such as this keep the economy going, the police are investigating but how many genuine cases of racism do they ignore? They choose to investigate this one because it's high profile. I mean what are they investigating? Did they do it to mock black people or to look like the characters out of the film? How does a non black person do fancy dress as a Jamaican bobsled team without painting their face black? If the end goal for the racism activists and lawyers is that people do not see skin colour and we are all equal then do things like this really need to be made a issue of?

It's the age of political correctness which is actually dangerous for true racism as people get sick of incidents like this detracting from true issues

You're quite correct and left-liberal policies (and the sixties cultural revolution in general) have been disastrous for blacks in America. Instead of facing up to its destructive effects, groups like Black Lives Matter come up with excuses, perpetuating the notion that underachievement and poverty in black communities is because of racism. Post-modernist philosophy has been particularly insidious because it removes any kind of agency from the individual and in the case of a black person, sees them only as representing a victim group. Conversely, whites are seen as innately "privileged" no matter what their sympathies.

Such thinking is incredibly dangerous, because it holds that there can be no understanding or dialogue between individuals from different groups. If a black person "fails", it isn't because they weren't responsible enough or didn't use their talents to the full, it is because of "white privilege". When you attach notions of "good" and "evil" to particular political views (where not just Nazis, but Tories are seen as "evil"), and hold that opinions themselves exhibit a form of violence, and therefore, legitimise violence, then you create a clear pathway to genocide. What we see with the "Alt-right" is merely a co-opting of the left's identity politics, but this time with whites as the embattled victim group. As with poverty, which is mainly an artificial creation of the left, in its embrace of post-modern thought and goading of tradition, the left has artificially resuscitated white nationalism. It is an utterly self-fulfilling prophecy and still they push, and push, and push and act with total bemusement at torch-lit vigils and Katie Hopkins.

Anyway, some good examples on YouTube of the fallacy of such thinking, the first by acclaimed economist, Thomas Sowell on affirmative action, the second by Jordan Peterson, Professor of Psychology at the University of Toronto on Charlottesville an group identity-politics:

You can't liken our situation to that in America, there's a whole different thing going on there. Not only stemming from the fact the American blacks were slaves in America & had to see a Civil War to be emancipated, which wasn't the case here. There's also the fundamentally racist view present in some quarters, probably stemming from the white Americans being descended from religious zealot settlers, they have an contempt of intelligence's & cultures different to their own, that they don't consider civilised. They were well into eugenics, and not from a positive aspect, it still creeps into their social & psychiatry policies.

Katie Hopkins is just taking the *. She's clearly got a type of ADHD, I'd bet with some oppositional defiance, she even suggested she's on the spectrum, she's just picking fights for fun, the closer she sails to wind / 'almost' breaks rules the more fun she's having. There's no way of knowing what she really thinks about anything. Imo.

To be fair the Jamaican bobsleigh idea for fancy dress is far more offensive for a different reason as it is now completely overdone, boring and irritating. Anyway if black people find this 'blacking up' phenomenon boring (which it is) offensive then it's their call. It's just another excuse for people like Katie Hopkins to bore the usual people who fall into the 'easy to divide' camp. ZZZzzzzz

Katie Hopkins is a naughty child who's never grown up, you can see it in her expressions. A cat playing, but it all slips if she realises she's genuinely upset / 'hurt' a person, and she backs right down. She's very different to some of the Alt Right Americans who actively seek metaphorically to draw blood by what they say, they have a malice Hopkin's doesn't have.

She is equally as unnecessary as people like Abbott. Best ignoring them.

Hopkins is the opposite end of the scale to professional activists but pretty much does the same job, worth over £3m for winding people up. All part of the game though, if she's so offensive then take away her newspaper column, don't have her on the radio or tv and don't report her tweets but she's useful for getting people angry.

She's useful in the respect that she sells papers because some people like to believe the world has been taken over by political correctness and pretend that racism doesn't really exist. 'Offended on someone else's behalf', 'millennial snowflake' etc. all just ways of saying I'm going to be offensive and if you don't like it it's your fault.

Racist no way, bad taste possibly, intentional definitely not.

Problem with incidents like this is it trivialises an important subject and provides unnecessary oxygen to both extremes of the debate.
