We're sixteen matches into the new season and there have already been 62 goals - this is an average of 3.9 goals per game For context - the 2019/20 season saw 2.7 goals per game, the 2018/19 season saw 2.8 goals per game and the 2017/18 season saw 2.7 goals per game - relatively consistent.
Now sixteen games is not exactly a massive sample size and there's also the fact that Sandwell Town are in the Prem, so that was always going to skew the figure upwards by virtue of their general ineptitude and ****e defending, but it's certainly a striking comparison to make. Is the lack of fans encouraging away teams to have more of a go? Are players able to hear each other better in empty stadiums? If this season does see the re-introduction of supporters into stadiums, it will be interesting to see if the ratio changes significantly before and after...
