...only one days pay? If they're going to make that 'sacrifice', surely it should be a weeks salary. One days pay wouldn't even come close to the abject desolation I would feel as a fan after losing 9-0.

Fair play to them, they didn't have to donate any money to charity. Though I wonder if it was the players decision, or did they get asked to by the manager.

As alluded to above, this is likely a request/direction from above.
I remember a few years ago someone was trying to get every premier league player to donate a days wages to charity, a documentary was made that featured Man City.
Will always remember lescott asking why he couldnt just make a donation, not a days wage? Don't think she ever accomplished her aim.
