The best player to have played in the Championship....
Better than Van Hooijdonk who played for Forest in 1998 and scored 34 goals that season? 29 in the League in 42 matches I guess?

Different positions I know, he was 28 at the time, but he still played 46 matches for a Dutch team who at the time had players like Kluivert, Hasselbaink, Van Nistelrooy or others?

Unless you are counting from the start of 2004/2005 season when they switched the name from Division One to Football League Championship?

I remember singing it for Richard Stearman.. albeit slightly tongue in cheek!

One thing this video highlights is how much room Derby allowed him. Barely any press, and he was able to stroll. Better teams will stand on him, suffocate him.

Like Andrea Pirlo, however, his intelligence and body movement, and sheer speed at moving the ball on accurately, will really see him take it up a notch next year against quicker, sharper teams.

Love a deep midfield playmaker, and he is up there with the best I've seen.

He is the “Magic Man”...Very intelligent footballer, Pirlo was sublime but Ruben could be better...

He still has to do his thing & is the best midfielder I have seen in a Wolves shirt don’t get me wrong but Derby offered nothing & let us stroll around, with time & space on the ball he will pick apart most teams in this league with ease & class.

I would like to see him/us progress so when the switch to wing back isn’t on (first half of the season Coady played loads of these balls also now not so much) that either the centre half or Neves/Saiss are able to push on higher up down the middle driving at teams creating that space.

This is what we’ll need next season unless Doherty/Douglas are replaced as I can’t see them being athletic/quick enough to get past he quicker stronger full backs in the Premier League.

Wow, he shot because he was worried about giving the ball away in a dangerous position. Wolves ace Ruben Neves shares the real reason why he attempted 35-yard wonder strike

“I know I have a good shot so when the ball is there I have to take risks. My first touch was not good! The ball went behind me. If I lose the ball there it’s dangerous for my team so I have to shoot. It was bad control but I can’t lose the ball there so I had to shoot."

That was one of the better things Cardiff did. Both at Molineux and at Cardiff they stuck a man on him and forced him to play it sideways. When we went one-nil up in Cardiff he got a bit more room as Cardiff had to take more risks. I'm surprised more teams haven't man-marked him.

I reckon teams have tried it but he’s just too good at finding spaces and time on the ball, even man marking him isn’t gonna stop him controlling the game.

I think this is one thing that Championship sides haven't quite worked out yet.

Pulis, Warnock and to some extent Rowett all set up to prevent the full backs getting forward and peg them back. They did this by having their central midfielders sit so deep they could cover the runs of Douglas and Doherty.

All this did was allow Neves, Saiss and the back 3 all the time in the world to control the space around them. Ultimately all 3 of those teams ended up with at least a back 6 for large parts of the game.

The only team I've seen completely nullify Neves is Villa at Villa Park. Okay that was an off day for the whole team but Neves never really got into the game. He found himself in a midfield that was outnumbered and overrun. Didn't help that N'Diaye was like a headless chicken that day and sent most of his time trying and failing to upset Grealish. Say what you like about that fat potato headed, lying, moaning dollop but he's the only one to really work out how to stop the greatest Portguese footballer of all time.

That is porn-esque.

How much room and space did the Derby players give him / us though? Ridiculous. They looked like a mid-table nothing-to-play-for team going through the motions.

It's been noticeable that neves now tries more attacking through balls rather than just the switch. We just haven't made the best of them.

My favourite moment apart from the obvious ones was when late on he actually made a bad pass and gave the ball away. Doc immediately bust a gut to win it back and passed it back to Neves again. Neves took the time to applaud him before receiving the pass - stay humble. :)

Or Robert Prosinecki. One of the few players to have played for both Real Madrid and Barcelona. Absolutely ran the show for Portsmouth.

However its looking likely due to Portugal's midfield problems that he will be in the world cup squad and likely starting! If he has a good world cup his value will soare and mendes will want to make the most of that and possibly fosun aswell.

Trouble is he wasn't being used right in that last friendly didn't make him look very good

I’m sick of people saying “why is he at Wolves he’s far too good for them “

The widely accepted view is that Neves is the best Championship player by far, far too good for this division. And Wolves are still a Championship team. But the rub is he, like Nuno, has been sold on a project, a vision which means that next season Neves will be show casing his talents amongst and against some of the world's best players.
