In some respects, the end of this season is reminiscent of the season under McGoo when we went to Barnsley and won 3-1 away and everyone thought that auto was sewn up. In the end, we finished third and the rest is history (including Palace buying Emblen and Smith).

If we turn this around to apply to this season, Watford appear to have won the major prize of getting through to the Cup Final, but it could be that Wolves make Europe by being better throughout the season rather than on a warm day in April at Wembley and that we end up in Europe, rather than the team that beat us twice in the season.

On the flip side is that cup games are one-offs. As Rennes showed against PSG on Saturday, there are no guarantees in football and I wonder if we would all take the all or nothing chance that Watford have (assuming we can beat 'Doing Bits' on Saturday) or would rather rely on Citeh to do us a favour, perhaps if we can do them one on the final day of the season?

As long as we finish seventh we still have an interest in the cup final, which means our season carries on beyond the time we play in it, which raises other interesting questions around recruitment and attracting talent to Wolves, especially as we are very good at getting our players in early on in the close season.

Thoughts on the permutations (leaving aside the technicalities of Euro qualification)?

Yes, it would be nice to have City playing for us in the Final. Anyway, it’s the least they can do after we hand them the title by winning at Anfield.
