Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has waxed lyrical about Reds ace James Milner, a player who can do “pretty much everything”.

The 35-year-old has been sensational for Liverpool since joining on a free transfer back in 2015.

Milner has clocked up 254 competitive appearances for the Reds, and has won the Premier League and Champions League under Klopp.

The former Leeds, Newcastle and Manchester City man has played in a variety of positions at Anfield.

A midfielder by trade, Milner has also featured on both flanks, on the wing and in defence.

Liverpool ace Milner is a “smart” footballer – Klopp

At present, Klopp is deploying him at right-back in Trent Alexander-Arnold’s absence.

Milner kept Wilfried Zaha quiet in Liverpool’s win over Crystal Palace and also shone against Porto.

While Klopp admits Milner isn’t a fan of playing at right-back, he commended the player for his quality and attitude.

“I’m not sure James knows already all the positions he can play,” Klopp told the Liverpool media team.

“He doesn’t like the position, but he plays it really exceptionally well because he’s a smart footballer and he likes to be involved in the game.

“We didn’t make the decision yet, but if he plays there – or he is used to play there, like in the last few games – he did really well, that’s true.

“He is just a very important part of the squad, not only if he plays – when he plays as well, but in the dressing room he is an incredibly influential player.

“It’s really nice he can have both of these things; being in the dressing room, a real engine and on the pitch as well.

“I am really happy for him that he has the opportunity to play these kind of games and put in these kind of performances because it just shows his whole spectrum.

“He can do pretty much everything, he can play each position and it’s really nice.”

Liverpool are up against City at Anfield on Sunday.
