Just read of the sad passing of a true sports writing legend in Hugh McIlvaney. A man who could write about paint drying and make it sound fascinating.
Sir Matt Busby, Jock Stein ( Hugh wrote a superb piece about Jock as he was there that night in Cardiff in 1985 when he died ) Bill Shankly and even Sir Alex a man who deeply distrusted journalists would all speak to McIlvanney.
After the famous knockout of George Foreman in Zaire, two hours after the fight Ali invited Hugh Mcilvanney to his residence and gave him the first one on one interview after the fight.
Probably the last of the cigar smoking hard drinking journalists as his like pass sadly into history.
