How much to buy our current squad?

The rules are;
  • This is not about if we should sell
  • If we did sell what is a realistic price
  • consider what would be the cost of a similar sort of player given age/potential/current performance levels etc?
I will start;

Goalkeepers
Rui Patrício - £25m
John Ruddy - £2m
Will Norris - £500k

Defenders
Ryan Bennett - £12m
Willy Boly - £16m
Conor Coady - £15m
Matt Doherty - £20m
Jonny - £15m
Rúben Vinagre - £4m

Midfielders
Leander Dendoncker - £15m
Morgan Gibbs-White - £10m
Ryan Giles - £1m
Pedro Gonçalves - £300k
João Moutinho - £10m
Rúben Neves - £45m
Romain Saïss - £7m
Elliot Watt - £300k

Forwards
Benny Ashley-Seal - £300k
Léo Bonatini - £2m
Ivan Cavaleiro - £9m
Hélder Costa - £6m
Bright Enobakhare - £500k
Raúl Jiménez - £35m
Diogo Jota - £25m
Adama Traoré - £10m

Think you've over-valued some and under-valued a lot ... my attempt below.

Goalkeepers
Rui Patrício - £20m - Due to age nothing else
John Ruddy - £1m - Good but towards end of career
Will Norris - £1m - potential

Defenders
Ryan Bennett - £8m - playing out of his skin but I think this is more realistic
Willy Boly - £16m - agree
Conor Coady - £20m - English ...
Matt Doherty - £30m - Based on the price of Walker and counts on home grown
Jonny - £20m - Spansih International
Rúben Vinagre - £3m - Still unproven

Midfielders
Leander Dendoncker - £20m -More realisitic imo.
Morgan Gibbs-White - £7m - unproven consistently
Ryan Giles - £1m - agree
Pedro Gonçalves - £300k - agree
João Moutinho - £8m - age
Rúben Neves - £60m - age, contract length and scope for impovement further
Romain Saïss - £5m - good squad player but probably about right
Elliot Watt - £300k

Forwards
Benny Ashley-Seal - £300k - agree
Léo Bonatini - £2m - agree
Ivan Cavaleiro - £16m - Somebody would pay it, Newcastle/ Huddersfield supposedly after him
Hélder Costa - £12m - still does in in flashes
Bright Enobakhare - £500k - agree
Raúl Jiménez - £50m - Best striker outside the top 6, smashed it this year, Everton paid £30mil for Cenk Tosun and you have £60 mil flying around for Callum Wilson
Diogo Jota - £35m - On current form
Adama Traoré - £20m - There's a good player in there and he has something completely different

Neves for £45m???

You must not have seen the Guardian article saying we've set a £110m price tag to essentially say **** off to anyone that wants him.

Now while I don't think anyone would be bidding anywhere near £110m for Neves, I think it would take a bare minimum of £65-70m for his sale to even be remotely considered.

I think he'll stay for next season anyway, especially if we get 7th and a Europa League spot.

My penny's worth

Goalkeepers
Rui Patrício - £20m
John Ruddy - £2m
Will Norris - £500k

Defenders
Ryan Bennett - £7m - coming up to his 30's now
Willy Boly - £20m - think teams above us will be looking at him
Conor Coady - £15m - £18m - should he get an England call up even more
Matt Doherty - £20m
Jonny - £15m - £20m - the £15m was what we agreed before a good Premier League season
Rúben Vinagre - £4m

Midfielders
Leander Dendoncker - £15m
Morgan Gibbs-White - £10m
Ryan Giles - £1m
Pedro Gonçalves - £300k
João Moutinho - £10m
Rúben Neves - £45m - surely around £60m - £75m gotta be worth more than the likes of Sigurdsson
Romain Saïss - £5m - not quite unto the £7m, would interest a promoted club
Elliot Watt - £300k

Forwards
Benny Ashley-Seal - £300k
Léo Bonatini - £2m
Ivan Cavaleiro - £9m
Hélder Costa - £6m
Bright Enobakhare - £500k
Raúl Jiménez - £35m - we buy for £35m but gotta be worth more than the £50m Everton paid for Richarlason
Diogo Jota - £25m
Adama Traoré - £10m

Am I the only one who thinks Saïss is worth more than £5m? Surely worth £10m these days?

Also, not convinced on Rui being worth more than £15-£20m. Goalkeeper value is very much correlated to their age and/or ability on the ball/distribution at the moment. This isn't meant as a slight on him either - I love the fact he's our player but I don't know what club would pay £30m for him at his age.

Costa is a busted flush. If Stoke want him for £4m its a deal.

I think you are all under valuing Ruddy.
If you were a mid table championship club seriously going for promotion and you needed a keeper I think £5M would be very well spent on him.

10 million for Traoré? He'll be worth nothing by November 2019 at this rate!

I think we would struggle to get our money back for traore should he be deemed surplus to requirements. Some championship club may pay 10m in my opinion.

Actually a very good description to anyone who understands poker.... because a busted flush is still a flush... which in most circumstances is a good hand. 2 years ago, he was surrounded by one or two straights, a few 2 pairs and a few high cards.. so looked great. Now he is surrounded by full houses and 4 of a kinds.... no straight flushes yet, but we're getting there... so doesn't look so good.

Chelsea turned down £35 million for Hudson Odoi from Bayern so his England u18 world cup winner colleague MGW is defo undervalued.Ruddy seems very nervous these days -can see him leaving in the summer, perhaps on a free.

Think this thread was always gonna go down the ‘you’ve under/over valued a player’ route

For me, we would get our £ back on Traore, Nobody would pay 5 mill for bennett? Really?

Oh. And Neves is priceless.

Just randomly I;m confused by this. To me a busted flush isn't a flush?

Do people posting that we wouldn't get £25m for Rui because he's too old know how old he is?

It's a flush that was winning the hand until another player improved to a full house, four of a kind or straight flush with later draws/streets of cards.... the problem with busted flushes is people tend to lose a lot of money on them, because they get attached to their earlier high value and refuse to believe they can be beat...

Correct.
What they actually mean is an incomplete flush.
Someone who already holds 4 cards of the same suit playing the odds that the 5th would come on the turn or river. But doesn't.
Anyway, you get it.

Fair enough, I've only ever used it in the context of having 4 suited cards and staying in a hand hoping to draw a 5th but ending up with nothing.

Kind of impossible to do these kind of threads because a players valuation is completely subjective and the actual number depends on many different circumstances and, at the end of the day, a players value is only what someone is willing to pay

You could argue that players value could go up and down as much as 50% depending on
  • Length of contract
  • The desire/desperation of the buying club and their resources
  • The players happiness and if he’s asked to leave
  • The desperation of the selling club and FFP requirements or the need to get a priority position in
  • Is the buying club a rival because they can pay more
All our players are on long term contacts, are happy and we don’t need to sell unless we want to so when you look at Cav for example right now there’s no way we’d sell for as little as £9M, which you might say is his ‘value’ we’d sell for double that in his current circumstances as a happy player under contract. Someone wants him they got to tempt us with a big bid

However, if we wait another year and he’s going into his final year, is still on the fringes and not getting minutes and we need to balance the books then £9M is all of sudden a good deal

So right now, anyone wants any of our first team players they have to pay at the very high end or way over the odds to even get us to consider a bid

If Nuno does eventually tire of him, yes getting money back might be difficult.

But any team that plays with big lump, aerially dominant strikers could surely use him.
Maybe Burnley have more cash hiding down the back of the sofa.

Seeing as no team wanted to buy Bonatini in January when goal scorers are at a premium and he got subbed off at half time today, I fear we will have to take a big loss to get rid off him.

All seems thus far to be not too outlandish. I would just take the average and agree with that.

Though Bennett and Coady are grossly overrated, others are underrated.
