In fact, Owen says – and you'll remember that the athlete; the ambassador; the icon is not a man prone to embellishing things – that not only does he expect to have a shirt to hold up awkwardly in front of the cameras come Friday but he has several interested clubs to choose from. "Different things will form the basis of making the right choice," he said, hastily pocketing a piece of paper that read '1) A firm offer. 2) Is it really a firm offer? 3) Really? 4) Where do I sign?'

There is further cause for celebration this morning, as Luka Modric's move to Real Madrid has finally gone through. It would be easy to criticise Tottenham for stringing this one out, which sounds like exactly the sort of thing the Mill goes in for: after weeks, nay months, of insisting that they wouldn't take less than £40m, they've let Modric go for almost exactly what Real have been offering all summer – £30m – and left themselves with three or four days to spend it. Rennes say Spurs have offered them £12m of it for Yann M'Vila (also attracting Arsène Wenger's forlorn gaze), but there is also talk that the Marseille forward Loïc Rémy is the only Frenchman for Andre Villas-Boas. The cash could also fund moves for Shakhtar Donetsk's Willian and Fulham's Moussa Dembélé.

Speaking of Wenger, the Arsenal manager has said he is not signing Newcastle midfielder Cheick Tioté. "He is a good player but he's not on his way to Arsenal," were his precise words. No such assurances have been forthcoming in relation to speculation that Arsenal are planning a last-minute SWOOP! for Yohan Cabaye, mind.

Liam Moore has made just five appearances for Leicester City, four of them this month, but already he has had scouts from Manchester United, Everton, Sunderland and Tottenham watching him. Sir Alex Ferguson is expected to make the first move for the defender after having watched Michael Carrick's attempts to mark Marouane Fellaini. Everton are also being linked, along with Aston Villa, with a move for Wolves forward Kevin Doyle, who must have been scratching his head wondering how long it would take.

No noggin scratching for Joey Barton: he's been bashing his fists on the keyboard again, trying to get that move to Marseille. "Enough is enough," he said, adding that he had offered to resign from QPR after getting banned for 12 matches at the end of last season. By the by, Owen Hargreaves, who has been performing his trademark twists and turns on treadmills at QPR's training ground, is apparently attracting interest from Lille.

A miniature selection box: Wigan are thinking about trying to sign Lee Chung-yong from Bolton; Southampton fancy they can pip Arsenal and Internazionale to Ajax full back Nicolai Boilesen; Swansea have told Garry Monk he's got less chance of playing than Michael Dawson, much to the delight of Bristol City; Reading plan on signing Notts County winger Alan Judge; Tom Ince says he's happy to stay at Blackpool; Dedryck Boyata looks to be on his way to FC Twente; and Sam Allardyce is welling up after being offered Hoffenheim's 6ft 5in utility player Isaac Vorsah.

And finally, the Manchester City manager, Roberto Mancini, has said the next five days will be "a long and important week" of hard work for City. And also for the Mill, which will be forced to link the club with all the same people – you know, Scott Sinclair, Javi Martínez, Daniele De Rossi – every day. Every sodding day.

Arsenal

Newcastle United

Georgina Turner

guardian.co.uk © 2012 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies.
