An initial bid has been turned down, but the Dane has told his current employers that he wants to go, go, go, and we all know what happens next. Real Madrid and Barcelona are also interested in the Danish tacklesman, though the latter might end up with the man City now want to ditch, Kolo Touré.

Also on his way out of Anfield, though with fewer regrets, is useless midfield waster Alberto Aquilani. The Italian, who has already celebrated the second anniversary of his most recent league appearance for the Reds, is the subject of a bid from Fiorentina. The Viola are now nursing a badly gnashed hand, and Aquilani's agent is discussing personal terms.

One player whose agent won't be spending very long discussing personal terms before advising his client to sign and leaving negotiations sporting a broad grin is Simon Cox. The West Bromwich bit-part is wanted at Blackburn, who are happy to part with £2m to bring their man to Lancashire, and then to hand over a further £30,000 every week to keep him happy. (Though the Birmingham Mail reckon that "certain members of Blackburn's hierarchy want to stop the deal" leaving "Cox's future in limbo". Celtic and Charlton are also keen.)

The Chelsea chief executive, Ron Gourlay, may have OKed the signings of Oscar, Marko Marin, Eden Hazard and Brother Hazard this summer but he's not done yet, promising two more before the start of the season. "We are still looking to strengthen in one or two areas, and there will certainly be four or five and maybe a bit more players going out on loan," he pledged. Wigan's Victor Moses and Marseille's £8m-valued right-back César Azpilicueta are likely to be high on his list of possible targets.

Sunderland have slapped down a hefty offer for Wolves striker Steven Fletcher, said to be close to his £10m asking price. Fletcher might be joined in the north east by Mathieu Debuchy, who has told best pal Yohan Cabayé that he dreams of wearing black and white stripes. "He wants to play for Newcastle and I hope he comes to Newcastle because he is my friend," said Cabayé, "but also a very good player."

In news that wouldn't go anywhere else but wasn't long enough on its own to make a whole paragraph unless loads of words were bolted on the front for no purpose other than to make it look a bit more substantial, Bolton want to sign Arsenal's 19-year-old striker Benik Afobe on a season-long loan.

Simon Burnton

guardian.co.uk © 2012 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies.
