But he made no mistake this time when the ball fell to him in front of goal following a corner, confidently lashing it home before raising a finger to his lips in celebration.

The substitute Andy King pulled one back in the second half but Leicester could not find an equaliser, making it a disappointing 49th birthday for City's manager, Nigel Pearson.

Charlton had paraded Ricardo Fuller, who was released by Stoke City this summer, at half-time.

The new signing Rodri marked a stunning debut with a goal as Sheffield Wednesday defeated Birmingham City 3-2 at Hillsborough.

After Reda Johnson capitalised on a handling error from the England goalkeeper Jack Butland to head the opener, the tricky Spanish forward – signed on loan from Barcelona B on Monday – rewarded David Jones for giving him his first start with a well-taken finish.

Nikola Zigic pulled one back for Birmingham but Jermaine Johnson made sure of the points with Wednesday's third before Marlon King's late penalty.

Much improved Wolverhampton Wanders got their season going with a 3-1 victory over Barnsley, while Luke Williams sealed a first Championship win of the season for Middlesbrough with a thunderous late goal to beat Burnley 3-2.

Matt Phillips came off the bench to earn Blackpool a 2-1 home win against Leeds United as they came from behind. Tom Lees had headed Leeds in front and Blackpool saw two penalty shouts rejected before the substitutes Nouha Dicko and Phillips, who wants to leave Bloomfield Road, turned the game around.

Kevin Davies and Chris Eagles each had late goals as Bolton Wanderers got their first league win, beating Derby County 2-0.

Jordan Rhodes's stoppage time penalty salvaged a point for Huddersfield Town in a 1-1 draw after Simon Cox looked to have marked his first Nottingham Forest start with a winning goal.

Bristol City beat Crystal Palace 4-1 to get their season rolling. Ryan Taylor got the first with nine minutes on the clock and moments later Martyn Woolford rifled home a left-footed shot. Jonathan Parr brought down Jonathan Stead in the area just before the hour and Stead's penalty made it 3-0. Kagisho Dikgacoi got one back for Palace but Albert Adomah smashed home from 25 yards to seal it for City.

Michael Chopra capped a fine move in the dying moments as Ipswich Town snatched a 1-0 win at Vicarage Road to beat Watford.

Darius Henderson scored the winner for Millwall as they came from behind to beat Peterborough United 2-1. George Boyd put the hosts in front before Scott Malone levelled.

Brighton & Hove Albion and Cardiff City shared the points in a goalless draw.

Championship

Charlton Athletic

Leicester City

Sheffield Wednesday

Birmingham City

Bolton Wanderers

Derby County

Huddersfield

Nottingham Forest

Bristol City

Crystal Palace

Millwall

Peterborough

Brighton & Hove Albion

Cardiff City

guardian.co.uk © 2012 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies.
