The full-back who scored the winner, for West Germany in the Italia 90 Final in the 85th minute from the penalty spot has died aged 63.

Alongside the World Cup, he won the Bundesliga twice, in 1989 with Bayern and 1998 with Kaiserslautern who did so the season after promotion, Serie A in 1989 and the UEFA Cup in 1991 with Internationale.

May he rest in peace.

What a player he was. It was said of the Welsh back in the 70s when they were utterly magnificent in rugby that they had a fly halfs factory, the same thing could be said of the Germans because they had a succession line of full backs that went from from Paul Breitner to Manny Kaltz then Hans Peter Briegel ( the biggest dude I ever saw play full back !!! ) before Andreas Brehme took over the mantle.

Andreas Brehme played in Serie A back in the late eighties / early nineties when Milan was the truly the greatest footballing city in the world. It was like Star Wars as on the one side AC had Ruud Gullit, Marco Van Basten and Frank Rijkaard while Inter had the German trio of Lothar Matthaus, Jurgen Klinsmann and Andreas Brehme.

A great player who played for the best teams in Europe and won trophies with them. He was a star of that excellent German team in 1990.

R.I.P.

Gave me a shock when I read this earlier today and took me straight back to Italia90; quite some player he was. And quite some World Cup that was.

RIP big man.

RIP I remember he scored the penalty against Italy in the final.

There is a funny video of him online from recently where he was doing a video interview and his wife walks into the room naked. I won't post it out of respect for the deceased and because it's technically soft porn because of the full frontal nudity but if you search for 'Andreas brehme frau video' or 'Andreas brehme wife video' you'll find it easy enough.
