Don’t profess to be an expert, but how does a team with Son and Hwang in lose to Jordan? Christ, how bad are the other 9 players!

They aren't bad most play at a decent level. Seems like some very poor coaching going on.

Commentary reckons the players aren't fully behind what Klinsmann is trying to do which is why they weren't really trying much today.

Hwang being influenced by one of the great strikers of his generation hardly strikes me as bad news....

Klinsman is a fraud of a manager. Hwang knows what a good manager is, doesn't he? And he'll know Kilnsman is a clown. The only thing Kilinsman could teach Hwang is how to dive even worse than he already does!

South Korea had made such a habit of scoring dramatic, late, game-saving goals in the Asian Cup their style had been dubbed “zombie football”.

In their last-16 game against Saudi Arabia, a stoppage-time equaliser saved them and they ended up winning on penalties.

In the quarters, more of the same: a 96th-minute penalty from Hwang Hee-chan of Wolverhampton Wanderers took them to extra-time against Australia before Son Heung-min’s delectable free kick won it.

They also scored twice in stoppage time in the group stages when stumbling to draws against Jordan and Malaysia. Back from the dead, time and again. Zombie football.

But in the semi-finals, meeting Jordan once more, their luck ran out.
At half-time, Jordan had registered 12 shots to South Korea’s four. This is South Korea with a front three featuring Son and Hwang, fourth and joint-seventh in the Premier League top scorers list respectively, plus the gifted Lee Kang-in of Paris Saint-Germain. And they offered next to nothing.

Son had 15 touches in the first half, the lowest of anyone on the pitch, as a ponderous and idealess South Korea wilted, particularly in midfield where they were outfought.

All of this reflected horribly on their manager, Jurgen Klinsmann, who was under a glaring spotlight of scrutiny coming into the tournament amid accusations of old-fashioned 4-4-2 tactics which seemed to centre around waiting for Son to do something amazing. There was also the impression that Klinsmann, who unlike his predecessors had not moved to live in South Korea (staying in the US), was phoning the job in.

Watching a limp and lifeless performance in such an important game, with huge pressure from back home to deliver a first Asian Cup trophy since 1960, it was inescapable to avoid the impression that the players were either playing for themselves, or for Son, but probably not for Klinsmann and certainly not to any coherent plan.
Decent write up by Tim Spiers on Korea's Asian Cup run.
Klinsmann is not as good a coach as he was a striker.

Hwang will want to showcase himself in Gary's fluid front three as quickly as possible. Sounds like he's escaping a nightmare experience.

Hosts Qatar beat Iran 3-2 in their Asian Cup Semi-Final this afternoon.

It will mean they will play Jordan in Saturday’s Final at The Lusail and have a chance to defend the trophy they won for the first time, in the UAE in 2019 against Japan.

It’s surely one of the most unlikeliest Continental finals in football history.

South Africa level it with an 89th Minute penalty in the first AFCON Semi-Final v Nigeria, which saw the penalty given after a foul, which resulted in a Nigeria counter attacked and they put it in before VAR ruled it out.

This AFCON has been terrific stuff!

Has that happened before where a goal has gone in and it's ended up a pen for the opposition?

I thought VAR couldn’t intervene if the foul was outside the penalty area?

Fair comment. I was wondering what was happening.

Only two minutes added on, it took forever to sort out the incident when VAR got involved.
Yes, agree. I also think the commentator didn't know what was happening which confused all of us watching even more!

Qatar have defended the Asian Cup on home turf, with a 3-1 win at the Lusail against Jordan this afternoon.

It’s no doubt a very big moment for football in the gulf state, with them coming through against some other good nations.
