Aston Villa have made a very impressive recovery following the appointment of Unai Emery as manager after the sacking of Steven Gerrard back in November.

Only counting matches since the Spaniard’s appointment as manager, Villa would currently sit fourth in the table, highlighting the impressive impact Emery has had since taking over the side 16th in the table and just a point above the bottom three.

At the time of writing, Aston Villa are currently seventh in the Premier League table, level on points with sixth placed Tottenham as they make a surprise bid for European qualification next season.

The Villans had picked up 26 points out of a possible 30 prior to their 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford last weekend, which had seen them climb from the bottom half of the table to surprise European candidates.

A top seven finish for Emery’s men, whose final three games of the season after Saturday are all against their fellow European contenders, would guarantee their place in European competition next season for the first time since 2010.

They take on a Wolves side who have also made a recovery of their own since appointing a Spaniard as manager in November, though haven’t quite been as impressive as their West Midlands rivals.

Former Spain and Real Madrid manager Julen Lopetegui took charge of the club when they were bottom of the table with just 10 points from their opening 15 matches under Bruno Lage.

Wolves would be ninth in the table had the season have started when Lopetegui was appointed Lage’s successor.

The Molineux side had won three of their last four games before their 6-0 defeat at Brighton last weekend, leaving them seven points clear of the bottom three with four matches to go, not mathematically safe from relegation but effectively so.

Wolves are unbeaten in their last four matches with Aston Villa and have lost only once in the last seven.

Three of the six matches Lopetegui and Emery have managed against each other have ended in draws, with the former picking up two wins to the latter’s one.
