Recently invested in an Audio-Technica turntable after having collected a few re-issues of my favorite albums on vinyl and wondered if any of you have been doing the same.

The following ones sound particularly majestic on 180g;

Closer - Joy Division
The Clash - The Clash
Black Star - Bowie
Goo - Sonic Youth
Faith - The Cure
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Elton John
Never Mind The *******s - The Sex Pistols
In The Aeroplane Over The Sea - Neutral Milk Hotel
In The City - The Jam
You Cant Go Back - Richmond Fontaine

There are a few I am having difficulty in tracking down (i.e. Reading Writing & Arithmetic - The Sundays).

Anyone recommend any more re-issues as not all new pressings are great quality apparently?

Yep. I bought a turntable when we moved house last summer and have so far assembled the following 12" collection:

Lou Reed - Transformer
Bruce Springsteen - Born In The USA
Miles Kane - Coup De Grace
Rage Against The Machine (self titled)
Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
Father John Misty - God's Favourite Customer

Plus a load of random 7" singles that I bought on eBay (some of my old 00s indie favourites along with a few gems like Bowie's Absolute Beginners and Tears for Fears - Everybody Wants to Rule the World).

I've been collecting records for a few years, both old and new. I love sitting around and listening to them. Got a decent mix but most played include:

The National - Trouble Will Find Me
Radiohead - In Rainbows
Arctic Monkeys - Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino
The Strokes - Is This It
Kendrick Lamar - DAMN. / Good Kid M.A.A.D City

My fantastic Michell Syncro bit the dust a few years ago. Bloody amazing it was. Ive now got a much cheaper Project. Sounds good but doesnt look as amazing as the Michell did though.

Ive also because of life and space had to cut my vinyl collection down from a couple of thousand and now have about 250 of my favourite albums left. Mainly ones that I think sound great on vinyl or I love the cover. Fair bit of jazz, theres something special about jazz on a record player.

Its taken about 9 years to put all my old viinyl on CD. Used a CD Recorder for the job. What a way to rediscover music you've forgotten about!!

Fave album on vinyl? Billy Cobham - Spectrum

I keep looking at The National ones but just don't seem to 'get them' as much as I am told I should do!

They were a slow burner for me over the years but have become one of my favourite bands in the past few years. Trouble Will Find Me is by far their best album for me, would recommend giving it a go if you haven't already. That album aside, my favourite song by them is About Today.

I have one solitary vinyl album and I bought it (Faith no for more, The Real Thing) purely for the artwork.

I don't even own a record player.
I don't actually understand the fascination with them... Is it a nostalgic, romantic thing?

Theres much debate about the sound quality but many think that vinyl has a warmer sound than other sources

Theres a greater visual appeal. You see the record spinning. There's something compelling about a good turntable that you cant get from other electronics

Its a more tactile experience. You have to get the record out of the sleeve, clean it, place it on the platter, place the tonearm on the disc manually and remove it etc

You get the larger covers and art work. And you get liner notes that you can read without having similar quality vision to the Six Million Dollar man.

It brings out the geek in me.....as you can probably tell

I get the reason why people like it.
I like that people are so enthusiastic about it but I'm more of a CD man myself (or FLAC).

Having said that there are so many variables that change the listening experience. Acoustics, quality of tackle etc. I just think that CD's and digital has to be the purest representation of the music.

I have probably 200 vinyl albums in my loft, every Bowie album up to and including Let's Dance, every Dylan album up to John Wesley Harding, Echo & the Bunnymen, Japan, Visage, Cream, Hendirx and loads more, not been played now for 18 years.

I have countless vinyl singles and LPs upstairs, but have not owned a record players for goodness knows how many years. Much as I loved the old turntable, the sound quality of the music was not as good as modern day systems.

I buy loads of vinyl. having to stop myself, just cos of storage mainly.

not always sure about sound quality as been meaning to get some better speakers and a decent amp but there is a lot of great looking vinyl to appreciate as artwork as well as the music itself. I think it was last year I picked up the splatter version of tubelord’s our first american friends for instance

Tubelord – Our First American Friends (Repress w/ original test pressing splatter)

I sold my record collection or gave it away, some 20 years ago now

I still buy CD's though which makes most people roll their eyes and call me an old fud

I find vinyl a pain in the ass. You can't knock the record player, vinyl scratches easier and you have to turn the records over.

Give me convenience of give me death :D

I still have one record left: Sacrilege "within the prophecy" which I got back in 1988

My best friend is a pro musician...
The small cassette players/recorders that we all had mostly had only one motor for one of the reels....as the reel wound down, (i.e. became lighter on one side), he could hear the difference so he always bought a cassette player with equal torque on both sides.
When computers started doing music, like Napster, they ‘left out’ parts of the recording that the average listener wouldn’t notice. They reduce it.
To a pro, not just my friend, vinyl is still the best way to hear the timbre and subilties of the music. ....more room to carry more to the speakers.

I mentioned CD and FLAC as these are pure digital copies of the music as they were meant to be heard.

I know .MP3 and other audio formats are compressed to flatten the format and take bits out, but records have the opposite effect in my view. The artefacts which add to the sound (ie are not designed to be there by the artist) are the bits which people seem to like about the experience of listening on a record.

I'm not criticising anyone for loving vinyl .I think it's great how vinyl has endured as a format, but as a listening medium I can't see how it's better than CD, which is pure digital.

Personally I can’t tell the difference.

Me too - got loads of original Joy Division, Fall, Clash, Stranglers (Black and White with the white 7" freebie of Walk on By)....etc. and lots of original coloured singles - Undertones, Dickies, UK Subs, Dr. Feelgood and even the first picture disc pressing of "Are Friends Electric" which I had to ask my local record store to put under the counter whilst I went back home to get the money!
All went unplayed for many years until my missus bought me a turntable for Xmas. Spent all Xmas day listening to some old favourites.
Great nostalgia - but still had to have a 10p and some sellotape handy!

Have lots of Vinyl up in the loft, but nothing to play it on at the moment.
I was gutted about 10 years ago when we moved, lost most of my 7"&10" singles. Didn't realise until a couple of months later as records etc had been put into spare room until I'd decorated the house. Lot's of coloured vinyl, rarities, LE's, signed copies etc :(

Currently building a large garden room which will be an entertainment room. Toying with the idea of getting a record player when I've finished it.
With two mad Spaniels it just isn't worth it in the house.....

Men jailed for ‘fake’ vinyl records scam

apparently there's a fair bit of scam vinyl out there so if you're a buyer, beware.
usually identified via a much poorer sound quality, so good news for fans of dire straits, post gabriel genesis and related artists ****e and the mechanics and phil collins, as you're unlikely to pick up any discernible difference from the originals, according to 'experts'.
