Tottenham v Arsenal preview

Arsenal have recovered well from their back to back defeats in recent weeks which saw them lose their control on the Premier League title race and crash out of the Champions League at the quarter final stage with just a handful of days.

Mikel Arteta’s side’s surprise 2-0 defeat at home to Aston Villa a fortnight ago seemed to spell the end of their title aspirations having let Manchester City pull clear at the top of the Premier League table, but two hard fought and convincing wins in the last week ensure they’re still very much in the fight.

Back to back victories, a 2-0 win at Wolves last Saturday, and a 5-0 thrashing of Chelsea in a London derby on Tuesday night, mean the Gunners head into the weekend top of the Premier League table, currently three points clear at the time of writing.

Liverpool sit just behind in second place, three points off with the Gunners, while Manchester City sit four points behind with two games in hand, in what is proving to be the closest three-way title race for decades.

The north London side have picked up more points away from home than any other side in the Premier League this season, including having picked up 19 points from their last seven away league games, which stands them in good stead ahead of Sunday’s trip to Tottenham.

Ange Postecoglou’s side head into Sunday’s derby having won just two of their last five matches in all competitions, which has seen them fall out of the Champions League qualifying places with just a handful of matches of the season to play.

Tottenham currently sit fifth in the Premier League table, six points behind Aston Villa in fourth and and final Champions League spot, albeit with two games in hand, but are still having to play each of the three title chasing sides in their final six matches.

It will have been more than two weeks since Spurs’ last match due their scheduled opponents last weekend taking part in the FA Cup semi finals, leaving them a long time to dwell on their 4-0 defeat at Newcastle a fortnight ago which lost them control of fourth place.

Tottenham have made their north London home a bit of a fortress in recent weeks though, winning eight of their last nine home league matches since mid-December, and will be determined to ruin their main rival’s hopes of a first league title in 20 years this weekend.

Tottenham have won just one of their last six North London derbies, of which Arsenal have won four, including on their most recent visit to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, though that remains Spurs only home league defeat to the Gunners in the last 10 years.
