Liverpool fans have been left disappointed by the news that Jude Bellingham is now heading for Real Madrid.

The England international has been a target for Jürgen Klopp throughout the past 12 months as he takes Germany by storm with Borussia Dortmund.

Sadly for the Reds, Bellingham is now close to joining Real Madrid – according to Fabrizio Romano.

Thanks to Spanish news outlet MARCA, there are some more details.

What’s the story?

Well, MARCA explain why Liverpool – and Manchester City – did not make any attempts to rival Real Madrid for the Borussia Dortmund No.22’s signature.

It is said that Bellingham made Real Madrid aware that he had chosen the Santiago Bernabeu as his preferred destination, which resulted in Liverpool and Manchester City withdrawing their interest.

MARCA add that the English duo offered a lot of money for the 19-year-old’s services, with a larger salary on the table compared to what Real Madrid have presented.

However, Real Madrid are said to now have “peace of mind” over a deal after working on the transfer across the past 12 months.

Bellingham is expected to sign a contract running until the summer of 2029.

Borussia Dortmund had initially asked for €140m (£124m) to sell their talisman, although the Spanish news outlet add that Real Madrid are set to seal a deal for less than that amount, somewhere in the region of €100m – €120m (£88m – £106m).

Who Liverpool could sign instead of Jude Bellingham

After missing out on Bellingham, there are a few alternatives for Liverpool to explore.

Goal believe there are a number of names being considered by the Reds as they look to revamp their midfield department.

The likes of Nicolo Barella from Inter Milan, Ryan Gravenberch of Bayern Munich, Chelsea No.19 Mason Mount and Matheus Nunes of Wolves are all options for Klopp.

Be sure to keep an eye on Liverpool this summer, as we would be shocked if at least one new midfielder doesn’t arrive at Anfield.
