Now that really would have been good competition. Experienced and a good investment.
Odd one especially as we’ve been looking at him for 18+ Months, statistically one of the best ball playing cbs about. Final yr on contract hence price. Gutted, this boy passes like Steven Gerrard lol (on youtube at least).

Billy Gilmore for 10 million would’ve been worth it. Good signing for Brighton

Will be a starter there, would he have come here as a back up ?
Problem with finding back up options, most won't want to come
Yep, that was our biggest problem with bringing a CB in.

Ideally you’d bring players in who push your current starters to the bench, but because of the change of system that meant Coady and Saiss who both would have had question marks over them in a back 4. When you then consider Coady wanted to leave for game time having been an ever present keeping him could have made things awkward and Saiss was out of contract so was an opportunity to freshen things up with Gomes presumably being seen as his replacement from January.

That leaves Boly who, objectively would have been best suited to a back 4 but there are major questions over his ability now, he’d have been fine as a back up (although personally I’d have gone with Gomes before Boly if required anyway) but we were offered a fee for a player who wanted to go and in the end actively forced it. People may say West Ham held on to Dawson but he hadn’t refused to turn up to a squad, when Boly did that he was done here.

I’d have liked another CB in but when you weigh up all of the above you can see that it was a difficult task for the club. Most you’d want in will want to have a chance of starting which we clearly want to go with Collins and Kilman as a longer term partnership meaning you then had to go for someone who would be happy on the bench, that’s usually a young in experienced player (which we’ve got 2 of our own) or an older player who wants a wedge of money but may not have the drive to push our starters.

Dawson was a good option because his intentions were to move due to location meaning he was a good compromise between a player who would accept being a back up whilst also being good enough and driven enough to help Collins and Kilman and push them along. Just a shame West Ham pulled the plug but perhaps we’ll revisit this in January when his situation will presumably still be the same and West Ham can then get someone else in.

Revenge is a dish best served cold... and van Beek is a great case in point....

Maybe he was also giving him good advice! They are a basket case and tonic right now.

You’d have to think twice about moving there if you aren’t only motivated by money.
