Paul Merson has now shared one thing that could still help Arsenal win the Premier League title this season.

The Gunners are now relying on Manchester City to slip up in the final six games of the 2023/24 campaign to stand any chance of winning the Premier League – a similar situation to last season, of course.

It will be a huge shock if the Citizens do indeed drop points given the formidably ruthless nature of Pep Guardiola’s treble winners.

However – when speaking on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday – Paul Merson highlighted one thing that could actually help Arsenal win the Premier League title…

Paul Merson on what could help Arsenal win the Premier League title

Well, the man who made 397 appearances for the Gunners believes fixture scheduling could work in Mikel Arteta’s favour.

Merson highlighted the fact that Arsenal play two Premier League games before Manchester City embark on their next Premier League fixture.

The Gunners travel to Molineux to take on Wolves later on Saturday, before welcoming Chelsea to the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday.

In regards to Manchester City, Guardiola’s side have an FA Cup semi-final against the Blues at Wembley on Saturday, before a Premier League meeting with Brighton on Thursday.

Therefore – if Arsenal win against Wolves and Chelsea – the north Londoners would go four points clear of Manchester City, with Merson feeling that this could give the Gunners a mental advantage.

The 56-year-old said: “The only thing that you have got a case with for Arsenal… is they play their next two games before Man City, and that’s massive. If they go and beat Wolves and Chelsea, then all of a sudden Man City have to win their two games in hand to go above them, so that’s the only advantage.”

Merson then added that he believes Manchester City will win their remaining six Premier League games, so he clearly does not expect the Citizens to let this hypothetical scenario get inside their heads.

Blessing in disguise?

In our view, Arsenal are actually in a great position as things stand.

The leaders at this stage of the season have it all to do, whereas Arsenal can almost play without pressure now everybody expects Manchester City to win the title, instead of them.

This was evident last season, when Arsenal remarkably led the Premier League for a total of 248 days before succumbing to the pressure at the final hurdle.

248 – Arsenal led the Premier League table for 248 days in 2022-23, the most for a team who failed to win the title in English top-flight history. Agonising. pic.twitter.com/KR1E2DgjNS

It was actually an English top-flight record amount of time for a side to lead the division but not win the title, according to Opta.

Therefore, Arsenal being the chasers right now could actually work in Arteta’s favour – only time will tell for sure.
