A large number of Liverpool supporters made themselves heard as they booed the national anthem ahead of their clash with Brentford.

The club decided to play ‘God Save the King’ ahead of the Premier League fixture to mark the coronation of King Charles III who was officially crowned in a ceremony on Saturday.

With top flight clubs urged by the Premier League to play the national anthem, Liverpool confirmed their intention to do so in a statement released on Friday.

The statement read: “Before kick-off and in recognition of the Premier League’s request to mark the coronation, players and officials will congregate around the centre circle when the national anthem will be played.

“It is, of course, a personal choice how those at Anfield on Saturday mark this occasion and we know some supporters have strong views on it.”

However, the anthem could barely be heard, with a large number of fans booing the anthem and chanting ‘Liverpool, Liverpool’ instead.

They then burst into a wholehearted rendition of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ before the game ultimately kicked off.

They also took the chance to praise their own king, Kenny Dalglish, with a banner.
