Judgement Day on Fantasy Premier League is fast approaching with only a few weeks remaining to earn a respectable overall rank and attempt to finish ahead of that friend who stopped playing the game months ago.

Although time is running out to make a late surge up the league tables there is still plenty to play for, particularly as five clubs still have double gameweeks to navigate before the final day on 28 May.

Brighton have two doubles (in Gameweek 36 and 37), while Chelsea (in 37), Manchester City (in 37), Manchester United (in 37), and Newcastle (in 36) each have one.

With the exception of Chelsea (sorry, Blues fans), they are all clubs that managers would likely be targeting anyway and it certainly makes sense to use your transfers on their best assets ahead of the next three transfer deadlines.

Gameweek 34 top scorers

Goalkeepers:

  • Alisson (Liverpool) – 12
  • Pickford (Everton) – 10
  • Ortega (Man City) – 7

Defenders:

  • Ake (Man City) – 15
  • Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool) – 11
  • Soyuncu (Leicester) – 10
  • Estupinan* (Brighton), Dalot*(Man Utd) – 9

Midfielders:

  • Salah (Liverpool) – 18
  • Odegaard (Arsenal), Lerma (Bournemouth), Soucek (West Ham) – 15
  • Gross* (Brighton) – 14
  • Xhaka (Arsenal), Diaz (Liverpool) – 13

Forwards:

  • Haaland (Man City) – 16
  • Welbeck* (Brighton) – 15
  • Alvarez (Man City) – 14
  • Undav* (Brighton), Wilson (Newcastle) – 12

*One fixture to play – Brighton vs Man Utd, Thursday 4 May

If you’ve not yet maxed out your Brighton allocation, this weekend could be the time to do it as they host Everton before their back-to-back doubles. Newcastle have a tricky game against Arsenal this weekend, but along with the Seagulls are the only team playing twice in 36.

There is a later deadline than usual this week with the first fixtures kicking off at 3pm on Saturday, due to King Charles’ Coronation which is taking place between 11am-1pm.

Gameweek 35 fixtures

Saturday 6 May

  • Bournemouth vs Chelsea
  • Man City vs Leeds
  • Spurs vs Crystal Palace
  • Wolves vs Aston Villa
  • Liverpool vs Brentford

Sunday 7 May

  • Newcastle vs Arsenal
  • West Ham vs Man Utd

Monday 8 May

  • Fulham vs Leicester
  • Brighton vs Everton
  • Nottingham Forest vs Southampton

Jason Steele (Brighton)

With funds tight, Jason Steele gets the nod between the sticks. The Brighton shot-stopper has been a revelation in recent weeks, combining clean sheets against Bournemouth and Wolves with a penalty save at Nottingham Forest.

Owning three Brighton assets is a must over the next few gameweeks as they have more fixtures (with five) than any other side. While Steele wouldn’t be in our top three picks, he frees up plenty of cash to be spent elsewhere.

Price: £4m Points: 44* Gameweek 35 fixture: Everton (h)

Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)

Trent Alexander-Arnold has usurped Kieran Trippier as the most reliable defender in FPL after providing either attacking or defensive returns in each of his last six games.

A tactical tweak that has resulted in Alexander-Arnold shifting into more of a central role has helped him rediscover his creative spark: his six assists since Gameweek 30 is two more than any other player.

Price: £7.6m Points: 131 Gameweek 35 fixture: Brentford (h)

Ruben Dias (Man City)

Pep Guardiola deviously launched a flamethrower at FPL managers’ teams in midweek by giving Ederson – generally assumed to be the City player least prone to rotation – a rest against West Ham.

The selection of Ruben Dias, therefore, comes with a trigger warning: buy him at your own peril. The Portuguese is generally Pep’s go-to defender when crunch time hits and is so perhaps a safer pick than the others. Perhaps.

Price: £6m Points: 74 Gameweek 35 fixture: Leeds (h)

Pedro Porro (Spurs)

Yes, we really are recommending a Spurs defender this weekend. Pedro Porro has had a mixed start to his Premier League career, scoring a couple of superb goals at one end but struggling badly against tricky wingers at the other.

Spurs haven’t kept a clean sheet since beating Chelsea in Gameweek 26, but Porro’s attacking numbers are promising ahead of Crystal Palace’s visit. He ranks top for shots and sixth for chances created among defenders since Gameweek 30.

Price: £4.8m Points: 32 Gameweek 35 fixture: Crystal Palace (h)

Mo Salah (Liverpool)

Mo Salah’s penalty yips seem to be over after two successful spot-kicks against Fulham and Tottenham in Gameweek 34 put those glaring misses against Arsenal and Bournemouth in his rearview mirror.

The Egyptian’s days as the undisputed king of FPL may be over but he has still posted some excellent numbers with 18 goals and seven assists in his 34 appearances.

And with six goals in his last six games, Salah is finishing the season with a flourish.

Price: £13m Points: 207 Gameweek 35 fixture: Brentford (h)

Kaoru Mitoma (Brighton)

FPL managers are evidently an impatient bunch, as reflected by Kaoru Mitoma’s lofty position in the most-sold players list ahead of Saturday’s transfer deadline off the back of a surprise benching against Wolves.

Considering his form this season and Brighton’s glut of matches to come, selling Mitoma seems incredibly premature. He may have gone four games without an attacking return – prior to Thursday’s game with Manchester United – but a home fixture against struggling Everton presents a prime opportunity to kickstart his form.

Price: £5.6m Points: 117 Gameweek 35 fixture: Everton (h)

Morgan Gibbs-White (Nottingham Forest)

With so many players to choose from, Steve Cooper has chopped and changed his starting line-up throughout the campaign, but Morgan Gibbs-White has been virtually ever-present making 30 starts.

If Forest are to claw themselves to safety, they will need Gibbs-White to continue his purple patch against fellow strugglers Southampton on Monday. The midfielder has two goals and two assists in his last three games.

Price: £5.5m Points: 123 Gameweek 35 fixture: Southampton (h)

Son Heung-min (Spurs)

Son Heung-min’s disappointing form this season means he has barely featured in our FPL selections, however he has started to rediscover his golden touch of late and could be a superb differential in the final few weeks.

The Tottenham winger has scored five goals and provided two assists in his last eight games; Mo Salah is the only midfielder to outscore him during that run with 53 points to 52.

Son has a good record against this weekend’s opponents Crystal Palace too, scoring seven times in 13 league appearances against them.

Price: £11.5m Points: 140 Gameweek 35 fixture: Crystal Palace (h)

Erling Haaland (Man City)

Manchester City fans might have felt a tinge of apprehension at half-time on Wednesday night after seeing their side struggle to break down an organised West Ham outfit. They needn’t have worried.

Man City enter beast mode with win over West Ham as Haaland breaks Premier League record

Nathan Ake broke the Hammers’ resistance, but Erling Haaland settled matters with a freakishly composed finish to break the Premier League record for most goals scored in a season.

Born in Leeds while his father Alf-Inge was patrolling their midfield, Haaland Jr will be keen to enhance his record against his boyhood club in what will be Sam Allardyce’s first match in charge since replacing Javi Gracia.

Surely not even Big Sam can stop the Big Man?

Price: £12.4m Points: 257 Gameweek 35 fixture: Leeds (h)

Dominic Solanke (Bournemouth)

Chelsea’s season has plummeted to such a nadir that they are arguably the team to exploit from an FPL perspective.

Martin Odegaard profited handsomely against them during Arsenal’s midweek stroll at the Emirates, and Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke could do likewise at the Vitality this weekend.

The ex-Chelsea academy star is in great form having scored three times and provided three assists in his last seven games, while he also ranks top among all players for shots on goal during that period with 23.

Price: £5.6m Points: 123 Gameweek 35 fixture: Chelsea (h)

Callum Wilson (Newcastle)

Newcastle have a double gameweek in 36 and given the form that both of their strikers are in, it’s not the worst idea in the world to buy both Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak to supplement Haaland for the run-in.

If it’s a straight shootout between one or the other, though, Wilson possibly shades it given his electric recent run. He has scored eight goals and set up another in his last seven games, despite only starting twice in that period.

Price: £7m Points: 128 Gameweek 35 fixture: Arsenal (h)
