Arsenal may have surrendered their advantage in the title race but Pep Guardiola insists the Gunners have won the ‘most important title.’

Mikel Arteta’s side got back to winning ways on Tuesday with a comfortable 3-1 win at home to Chelsea, putting them at the top of the table, for now.

Two goals from Martin Odegaard and another from Gabriel Jesus helped Arsenal banish the memories of a costly April where they won just one of their five league fixtures.

A 4-1 defeat against Guardiola’s rampant Manchester City side followed draws against Liverpool, West Ham and Southampton meaning the Gunners’ threw away their advantage over City, who are two points behind but have two games in hand.

The reigning champions can regain top spot with a win against West Ham on Wednesday night – live on talkSPORT – despite still having a game in hand on the Gunners.

Guardiola’s side are now firm favourites to lift a third-consecutive Premier League crown which would extend Arsenal’s wait for a first title since 2004.

But the City boss believes Arsenal have already achieved a wonderful feat this season – a return to the Champions League for the first time since 2018.

“Maybe the mood there [at Arsenal] is a bit down,” said Guardiola ahead of West Ham’s visit to the Etihad Stadium.

“After seven years, they won the most important title – to qualify for the Champions League. Financially, for new signings.

“I’m pretty sure they have to be so happy, because they make an incredible achievement.”

Arsenal sit two points ahead of City going into Wednesday night’s fixture and it is not a foregone conclusion that City will go unbeaten until the end of the season.

But Guardiola’s side have hit top form at the right time with eight-consecutive league wins since a 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest in February.

Arsenal can ill-afford any more slip ups of their own despite tricky games against Newcastle and Brighton before closing out the season against Nottingham Forest and Wolves.
