Former Chelsea star Diego Costa has been hailed for saving 100 people from devastating floods in Brazil.

Heavy rains have killed at least 85 people in the country’s southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul.

More than 130 people are still missing, with around 150,000 people displaced, as floods destroyed roads and bridges and triggered landslides.

Pictures and videos on social media show Costa, who currently plays for Brazilian side Gremio, helping rescue people who were stranded.

It has been reported that he was on his way home from training when he came across people who were in need of help.

The 35-year-old is said to have used his Jeep to get people to safety, before then using jet skis with the help of friends, according to Cadena SER.

A witness said: “What Diego did today, I had never seen before.

“He only arrived [at Gremio] a few months ago, but he left his truck in the water and took his jetski and those of his friends.”

Pictures and videos online show Costa driving through flood waters to get people to safety.

The number of people he helped is said to be in the region of 100.

A two-time Premier League winner with Chelsea, Costa most recently played in England with Wolves in the 2022/23 season.

He moved to Botafego before switching to Gremio last year.
