Who cares about the FA Cup this year?

  1. A win tonight would even more make me believe its in our best interest in playing a reserve maybe even half youth team against Birmingham in the cup game Saturday.

Even if we do not win tonight we have a nice gap and risking injuries to major players in the cup would be silly. If we lose it makes no difference its not like we have a realistic chance of winning the trophy anyway, the league is the important thing.

I'd play the kids. Mick won't though.

I would play the strongest possible team. Its The FA Cup. Yes our priority is the league but this young team could do very well, the injuries wont clog up from a normal Saturday fixture.

Plus its against blues, defeat not being an option...

I would play the 'squad' players - Ikeme, Shackell, Collins, Hill, Friend, Vokes, Keogh, Gray et al.

Yeah my team against the Scummie brummies would be

    -----------------------------Ikeme--------------------------------

    Foley-----------------Shackell--------------Collins--------------Hill

    Gray------------------Edwards-------Potter-------------------Friend

    -----------------------Vokes----------------Keogh----------------

    Kids on the bench

I'd be looking to rest one or two but only one or two. This is the oldest club competition in the world and deserves respect. As for not having a realistic chance of winning it, Cardiff came close last season remember.

I would play a strong team as its the FA Cup however I would not be upset if we were to get knocked out. Rest a few who have played a lot of games already; SEB, Stearman, Ward, Iwelumo

    Something like:

    ........................Ikeme
    Foley.....Mancienne....Shackell........Hill
    Kightly........Henry.......Jones.........Jarvis
    ..................Keogh.....Vokes

Pretty decent line-up but would Chelsea let us play Mancienne? Wouldn't have got the full extended loan by then would we?

Normally I'd want a bit of a cup run, but as it's against a local rival who we are fighting for promotion..

I wouldn't want to risk blues doing a job on any of our key players, I'd also bring muscat back on a short term loan to look after theirs

Put the stiffs out, kids on the bench etc

SEB looks like he needs a rest anyway

Promotion should and is our main priority but I’d still like to see a strong squad put out.

I think a sensible squad would be the one which ProudWolf suggested, but personally I’d have the big guns on the bench rather than the kids. I’d feel a lot more comfortable if we were 1-0 down at half time if we could bring on SEB and co!

It's the FA cup folks not the $$$$ty Carling cup - give it the respect it deserves! I'd play the strongest team available!

Agree. The question is do we support a football team just to be fighting relegation and mediocrity in the premier league or to actually achieve some silverware?

Cardiff showed last year how close you can come to winning the FA Cup if things go your way and I'm a firm believer the more games you win the better as it can only breed confidence.

Injuries can happen in training, walking to the car, falling over a bottle of salad cream in Dave Beasant's case...it's purely fate more times than not.

Add in the fact it's Blues and I'm going and I want us to play a strong team, maybe with the odd addition such as Vokes, who deserves it and Shackell who could probably come in for Mancienne.

Or a goal? I'd play our strongest team. Its a sad day for the FA Cup if we can't get excited for this one. Plus, imagine the psychological boost if we were to turn them over on their own patch?

I can't face losing to blues. I can't see Mick playing a weakened team in the FA cup against a local & promotion rival.

I agree that the likes of Ikeme, Shackell, Hill/Friend, Keogh and Vokes in particular should be given a start. Keep Iwelumo, SEB etc on the bench. We could field a strong team and give Blues a run for their money without unnecessarily risking key players. Promotion has to be the priority. Any other season then of course play your best team (which is probably what MM will do anyhow).

    whatever happens....

we play the kids and lose, and "thick mick" is disgracefully disrespectful of the oldest tournament in the world etc....
we play the first team, jarvis, SEB and kightly get injured, and he's hung drawn and quartered from the nearest lampost....

personally i think we will rest a couple - as suggested, maybe henry, SEB, Iwelumo and maybe stears - maybe also give ikeme a run out - other than that, it will be usual team...

You play your strongest team possible due to the following reasons:

1: FA Cup - people go on and say "oh we are not going to win the cup" how on earth do you know that? You look at teams from lower leagues who have gone mighty close such as Cardiff, Milwall, Watford, Barnsley etc etc. This is a major tournament and with teams from the championship wanting to devalue it further you may as well scrap all cup competitions.

2: Local derby - this after the Albion is our next big derby so there is another incentive to win

3: Physcology - It does not matter if we play our strongest team or a weakened team because if you lose and lose badly it will be a blow so with us going there and winning will send even more shivers down the spines of our rivals.

I know Mick will play his strongest side as he loves the cup and so he should so bring it on and and those scummy Blue Noses

BILD - As a budding AV, better we loose that game than a vital player to injury in it. Risk loosing a battle to win a war

  26. Possibly the only worrying aspect of all this is that all these 'weakened' teams include Foley. Don't we have an alternative right back? We can't afford to lose him surely.

I used to believe in the respectful status of the oldest tournament in the world until the holders ManU were excused from defending it a few years back so they could play in FIFAs world club championship nonesense. If the holders and their FA don't respect it, why should I.

Its more important that we don't pick up injuries to key players. Full stop.

I think I'd be tempted to rest either Jarvis or Kightly, but certainly I would play Vokes and Keogh up front.

    Vokes needs some games.

    Spot on there TW.
The FA cup competition has not recovered from that Manure nonsense.
Premiership money is seen (for obvious reasons) more important than both cups even with European entry attached. Looking at last year not many "big" clubs took it seriously which ironically gives the lesser mortals a serious chance of a final.
Bloose and their fans will see this game exactly as we do. If we win..a good win..who ever looses ..good .. best off out of it

I don't give a toss about the FA Cup. It will only be a distraction and add fixtures to our already busy schedule. Play the fringe players and those that need match time.

Depends who we are playing. Beating blues would be a good moral booster and keep the run going.

It depends, if we have a good run and knock out one or two prem teams on the way without picking up injuries then fine. I always think back to the Newcastle game and see that as a major turning point in the promotion season. On the other hand if we get mullered by Brum and lose one or two key players then no I would rather we didnt take part.

If we get to the prem and consolidate, for me the Fa Cup suddenly becomes important again. Its conceivable for a mid table prem team to win it. Any club below that and the chances seem to reduce. Never happened in my life time anyway.

According to the E & S Jarvis is hoping for a decent Cup run. (sorry can't do the links)

Then again a certain friend of mine is hoping we don't do due to it nullifying his Half Season Ticket value due to League games being made into midweek games as a consequence.

    My ears are burning.

All other issues aside, I'd really like to see our key men given a rest. It's a big month in terms of our chances - give some of the younger lads a chance and lets see what they can do.

Is Davies available? Great chance to play his way into the side vs Preston if so.

I agree that we do not play with our best players for several reasons. Hope it will not end in a draw, as otherwise there would be a further fixture for the reply.

The 4th round of the FA cup is on Saturday 24th Jan, on the following Tuesday 27th January Wolves will be playing away to Reading, which is much more important this season than a cup run. Having a rest on the weekend 24/25Jan would be very important so that our best players can go to Reading and try to get a result there, rather than in the FA cup.

So I agree that we should put a team with those players who did not feature that much this season in the league matches.
