They went missing today, just like other times this season.

Henry was poor, backing out of challenges and always being second best.

Dave Edwards was ok but he didn't have that creative spark that was needed.

There was so much space in the middle of the pitch for the opposition to run into. It was almost becoming a joke. Mick needs to take a long hard look at this issue in January and sort it out. We need people there who have a presence, people who can own and control the centre of the park.

I tend to agree about the center of midfield, they are functional, they do a decent job but i feel the addition of one quality midfielder ( or a fit MD ) would finish off this team for this season. And as has been said, ben watson or Surman would be ideal, and they are both available.

Do you not think this is a result of our attacking style? At times we are almost 4-2-4 and it leaves our 2 centre midfield players a little isolated and outmanned in the midfiled battle. This is how McCarthy wants the team to be and we could have Fabregas and Makelele in there and there'd be times when they would be struggling a little! As long as they are performing their primary function of offering protection to the back 4 and allowing our wide midfield players to get forward as often as possible I think Mick is happy to sacrifice a bit of midfield control.

Total and utter garbage. We have a central midfield that is around the same standard as the other top sides in this league, which is why we at times look awesome and at other times can look not so good. I really don't like this pathetic arrogant attitude exuded by clueless morons that seem to think we have a divine right to pulverise all before us- the entire side has played it's part in getting us 6 points clear and still in with a shout of 100 points this season if they maintain the standards they have set so far and yet still people feel the need to complain. We will without a doubt need a new central midfield if and when we make it to the top flight but i'd rather not get there with 5 championship cloggers burdening on our wage bill so jones, edwards and henry will do just fine for me and any realistic fan thank you.

    Joke post.
Next to Foley, Henry was one of our best players yesterday and has been all season.

Karl Henry is a fantastic player - links it all up and holds the midfield well. He is the sort of player you only miss when he is not there!

Thought Henry had a good game yesterday, would of been my MOM if it wasn't for the perfect 10 Foley.

Slightly off topic and i doubt it will happen but i wish we could sign Mancienne permanent.

    Spot on , excellent post.

  12. The problem is that our style of play requires two good wingers, which we have, but they're not on the field together at the moment. When we've only got one winger he gets double / marked and the two midfield player get overrun as well.
Henty always works hard for the team; Jones has good points but doesn't seem to work as hard; Dave Edwards works hard but is still learning and sometimes forgets that with only two central midfielders he needs to show more positional discipline.
Against most clubs at our level we get away with it, but the better clubs find us out. Luckily most of the teams we play don't have a cutting edge so we get away with it as our league position shows.

A forward line of Kightly, Jarvis, SEB and Big Chris are such a handful, that for most of the time our midfield defects are relatively unimportant........at least this season!

Henry has done a great job most of this season but Dave Jones has been far too inconsistent imv. Good dead ball delivery and the occasional excellent pass are not enough. As has often been said, he does go missing too often and I presume that is why Derby let him go.

Edwards at times has looked great and is always full of running but whether he has the class you need in this key position is another matter. I'm praying Davies comes back from Leicester in great form and that MM gives him a fair chance. The rumours about O'Toole and others may indicate that MM wants to bring in another central midfielder in any case. My vote in that case would be for Surman who has the potential to be a Prem player and is still only 22. But ideally I would like to see Davies show he has the class many of us believe he has while getting a new three year contract.

I`m not complaining, but i can see there are players who would probably be available who would improve our side. All the best sides improve their sides when they are in good positions, so why shouldnt we. I dont agree we havent got a midfield, ours is pretty decent but the addition of a surman, watson or a fully fit MD would improve us no end imo.

Look i can see why your saying this and to some dagree i can understand, we do seem to me weak in that area and there is far much credit given to henry who is a work horse and improving but hardly the standard for him to play in the prem.

Edwards is a goal scorer and young and will improve a bundle but again hardly a creator in the middle spraying passes around the pitch.

Jones actually does have the quality to spray passes evreywhere but problem is he goes missing and hardly features unless its a dead ball.

Mark davies has not been a regular in any wolves team for long so dont think its fair people saying that all we need, think he can become a top plater in prem 1 day but thats if he fills his potential and stays fit.

I still think that there are many Wolves fans that do not appreciate the job that Henry does. There was a man sitting behind me on Wednesday that continuously slagged henry off. He stated that he had no left foot and he never gets forward. Do people like this not realise that he does his job effectively and consistently. Claude Makelele did not have all the talent in the world, but he didn't do too badly.

I thought that Jones made us a better side when he came on as we passed the ball better. Edwards is all over the place and effectively leaves us weaker in Midfield.

The Blues result changed the day from good to great!!! Reading were also lucky with the Penalty!

Henry is a decent player but nothing more, I think at times our ball retention isn't good enough with him in. We can get away with it against most in this division but the two games against the two around us have shown him up and would do in the Prem.

Whilst not an urgent issue I do think if someone is available (Watson and Surman or someone else) at the right price I'd be looking to do business.

Does anyone else think Foley is wasted at right back?? I think he'd be excellent in the centre of midfield if we had a decent right back to come in and replace him there.

I've often thought the same about Foley in central midfield Moira. As you say though, we would need to get a quality right back in for this to happen. I do feel that his composure and confidence on the ball in midfield would really benefit us. I can't see MM moving him from the back, as we are looking more settled there than we have for most of the season (with Ward at LB, not Hill).

    Moan, moan, bloody moan.

Henry was poor? He did the job he was asked to do and did it well. Backing out of challenges? What? Off the top of my head I can think of 5 or 6 times yersterday that Henry mucked in a broke down what could have been very dangerous breaks by Barnsley.

The problem yesterday is that we didn't have the balance in midfield. Personally, I think Ward at left back offers us a much stronger option than Hall as his overlapping causes sides real problems. Ward didn't have a bad game yersterday but he wasn't helped by the fact Hill didn't really support him as he should have done. I think that contributed to us looking slightly ragged.

If you could combine Jones' range of passing with Edwards' energy and ability to break forward then we'd have the player we need. Unfortunately, we're going to have to spend a fair few quid getting a player like that in.

I agree that Surman or Watson would be the sort of players we need - although I'd love us to break the bank and bring in Ledley. He's exactly the sort of player we need and ready for the step up if we were to get promoted. He's only got 18 months left on his contract too.

Strikers - great, wingers - great, defenders - great, goalkeepers - great, midfielders errr - pretty good!!! That's where the Jan money has to be spent. Not another kid but an experienced central midfielder, ideally with Prem experience, to guide us through the 2nd half of the season.

    what happens if

I have said before that central midfield is a problem. I agree that Karl Henry is a decent player who loves Wolves but, if we lost him through injury or suspension for several weeks who would we put in his position that would do the same job. On yesterdays performance we could play Kevin Foley anywhere but would we want to lose the best right back there is so do you not agree that central midfield needs strengthening

An accurate assessment in my opinion. I posted on the 'discussion' thread my 'concerns' about the strenghts and weakness's of our midfield.

Yesterdays game against Barnsley was a microcosm of most home games we've played against the Burnley's and Blackpools of this world. Barnsley had their best two players in midfield which were more than a match for our central pairing of Henry and Edwards, and for long periods dictated play. I was very impressed with Leon [the number 14]in particular, don't know anything about this guy but based on his performance yesterday would not be a bad acquisition.

Yet just like most teams in this division, they are unable to translate superior midfield possession into goals, [a bit like us last season]

What we possess is awesome fire power and a good defense.

Reading, Brum, and Q.P.R. showed how to nullify our passing game by stifling our engine room with a high tempo pressing game. we will prevail against most sides this season but I feel we need some quality back up for Henry Jones and Edwards when we are faced with sterner tests.

Looking at it that forward line has everything - pace, skill, height and most important of all it is clinical when it comes to the final third.

I do agree the central midfield needs a look over, we need a player next to Henry who is able to hold their own against the better teams in this division. Watson or Surman would be perfect and belong to clubs who aren't exactly rolling in the money - Southampton especially would probably sell if we offered £2m or more.

Nicely summarised Jackfieldwolf. I think with the fire power at our disposal and with the arrival of MM we can get by in this Div and promoted with our present midfield. However, I just would like the 'missing piece of the jigsaw' to arrive in Jan to take us through the Championship and on into the Prem next year.

Foley could undoubtedly do a job in midfield but can't see MM changing his position when he is playing so well. If we got up and were looking for a classy right back to replace Foley then Onuhoa of Man City is likely to be surplus to requirements next season and would be a hell of a good signing. However, if we reach the promised land I suspect MM's priorities will be a couple of new strikers, a winger, a central midfielder and signing Mancienne permanently.

  30. We would need to sign a world class right-back to replace Foley.
He could play successfully in midfield of course .......come to think of it, he could probably play successfully anwhere on the field, in his present form!
Wonder if he's ever tried goalkeeping?

Thanks for pointing this out I just hope MM is reading this thread so he can sort it out before the rest of the season stumbles on like the first 23 games.

  32. Just because we've got away with it during a number of games for half a season, there's no guarantee that we will continue to get the same results in the second half. We might, but also other teams might sus out our weaknesses.
Better to look at obvious faults before you **** up, and if you've supported Wolves for long you'll remember the **** ups only too well.

Anyway this is an opinion site, not a club forum.

Before i even started reading this thread i knew someone would mention...oh we need Ben Watson! I was proved right about 3 posts down.

What is so special about Ben Watson. I've seen him play and to be honest he's really no better than Henry and Jones. I really don't know where the obsession for him has come from. He's not going to improve our team one bit!

I'd rather see someone like Bodde or Gomez from Swansea or maybe even Elliot from Bristol. These are players that are playing well and from what i've seen are far better than Ben $$$$ing Watson!!

Bodde is out until next season, Gomez is on loan, a winger and won't go anywhere other than Swansea (and that's unlikely), Elliott got played off the park at Molineux in September while Ben Watson didn't.

Even if you had an attention span lasting three months, you'd rate both Watson himself and our chances of signing him in January more highly than them.

Our defence with Mancienne, Stearman and Foley is top class. A forward line of SEB, Iwelumo, Kightly and Jarvis is full of pace and power. Goalkeeping is an embarrassment of riches. Centre midfield is ordinary.

We could have pulverised Barnsley yesterday but our midfield misfired and in the end we grinded our way to victory. A quality midfield player is a must for the January window or a fit Davies given a run out.

    From todays Guardian match report:

The Ireland defender (Foley) has been one of McCarthy's most astute signings and symbolises the exuberance and hunger of his current squad. Any new arrivals in January — with the Watford midfielder John-Joe O'Toole a likely recruit — will have to adopt the same ambitious mentality that looks set to lift Wolves back into the top flight.

I thought he look good at Vicarage Road this season.

Identifying a quality centre midfielder has been prioritised and will be addressed next month, the fact we are top and could be someplace else next season has made us THE attractive option for the quality player required.

Have faith in Morgan, Moxey, McCarthy & Taff.
