Just reading in local welsh papers DJ's explanantion on losing out on Wayne to QPR. Cardiff offered $300k, QPR paid $600k plus gave him a $200k signing on fee and $20k a week which is more than he was on at Villa! Routeledge then spouts to the press how QPR made him feel really wanted which is why he joined...now i understand what he means..

Dave Jones is a habitual liar.

Mind you, he's well clear of Routledge, stinking attitude.

£200k signing on fee & £20k a week. Mmmm yep I'd feel really wanted with that kind of pay.

TBF though, Sir Jack is as mad as a box of frogs so I wouldn't be surprised if he did say it, even though he knew who he was. A way of getting out of signing someone he thought 'over the hill'

I heard an interview with Jones the other day and he's writing a book. It should be an interesting read as he seems the sort of man who won't be afraid of Sir Jack's lawyers.

I wonder if Paul Ince would say that Dave Jones was easy to get on with? Or Kenny Miller? Or Lee Naylor?

Chapter 4: "How I was the saviour of Wolverhampton Wanderers - with just £24m to spend"

Chapter 5: "Playing For The Shirt"

Chapter 6: "People talk about formations, but once those players cross the white line, they mean nothing"

He and Ridsdale are a perfect fit - duplicitous, incompetent, self-congratulatory specimens.

I know you'll have the proof to back up that claim of 24m. However, have you added the money he brought into the club (promotion, player sales etc)

No. As much of it was wasted on his own crap signings.

Having said that, I don't really want to go over this very old argument again, you like Jones, I don't. Neither of those stances are ever going to change.

I thought he was a good manager, yes. and if backed properly we may well still be in the PL. If Morgan was here at the same time as Jones, I reckon we would be.

I'm pretty sure he had to sign a confidentiality agreement as part of his settlement with us (as did Colin Lee) to protect Hayward and the club's back so I'd surprised if he gives too much away.

Even that Merson quote was from an interview, he had to quickly apologise for giving, presumably after a sharp prod from the lawyers over this clause.

Exactly right Marrs. I heard him talk recently - The book has more of a focus on his time at (and not at Southampton) and the trial and how it developed him as a person.

Dave Jones really stood out for me when we had Youl Mawene on loan.

I saw Mawene play in the friendly at Mansfield (mentioned here)

    http://icbirmingham.icnetwork.co.uk/0200sport/globalsport/2004/07/27/impress-or-youl-be-out-50002-14466170/

He was excellent. He was, if memory serves, player of the year with Derby the year before.

Jones - as was his style - was blathering and hesitant even though we were absolutely desperate for a reasonable centre half.

Preston moved really quickly after the Mansfield friendly and picked him up. I believe he went on to win at least one player of the year title there.

But here's my point, I distinctly remember Jones coming out and criticising the player for making the move saying 'We would have liked to have had another look at him' - if you're a footballer and you are not 17 years old or 35 years old coming back from a 12 month injury lay off, then you are going to sign with a club who offers you a deal rather than keep playing in trial games (he played 3 for us) for an indecisive man who clearly didn't think a career at Lens (who reached the semi finals of the Uefa cup in his time there) or a player of the season award at Derby (where he was signed for £500k) was enough to make a decision on the player. By no means is he a world class player but for the money Preston picked him up for he's served them well and we really, really could have done with a centre half at the time. This hesitancy is a common theme from Jones. He'll spend big money on Fowler, Hasselbaink et al but he doesn't have the conviction or - dare I say - ability to unearth a good player all on his own. Contrast that way of doing business with the way we do things now and it's like night and day. Thus I take anything he says with a huge pinch of salt.

I slightly defend Jones on the Mawene issue.

He played a couple of times during our tour of Norway that pre-season and was awful, can understand why Jones wanted an extra game or 2 out of him.

At least Jones won't be seen as a god like figure after this season when Mick (hopefully) gets us promotion with a far superior squad than the out of date pap Jones took us up with.

Even to this day he's signing over the hill players for Cardiff - still hasn't learned his lesson.

DJ will always polarize fans on here because he did actually get us to the premier league. I for one didnt like him and i dont like his snidey (sp) little comments he lets out about sir jack from time to time. If he had any real class he would keep his mouth shut. He hasnt really been bagged by anyone at Wolves. He never stormed the division with his expensive assembly of ready made footballers like we really should have. He scraped us up in the play-offs then squandered what little money he had to spend in the prem on players who never played that much ( the rat apart).

I dont blame people for liking him, after all, he got us into the premier league and i think people who think he did a poor job have a point too as he left us with a poor side in the end.

Personally I think this DJ vs Sir Jack argument is pure conjecture, and unless you were party to what actually happened I don't see the point in speculating about what is now a very tired debate.

Good post. Even the signing of Ross McCormack had a huge sense of fluke about it - he missed out on Marcus Bent and Kris Boyd so McCormack was at least his third choice target and in my opinion is arguably better than the other two pieces of $$$$ he was chasing.

I'm pretty sure he fluked Kenny Miller as well. If memory serves we were chasing Akinbiyi at the time, failed in that pursuit, got Miller in on loan (he was absolutely outstanding in the home game against Forest where he picked up a nasty injury) and looked like a very useful, young penalty box striker who must go down as a very good signing. But, as I say, I'm fairly sure we were actually trying to buy Akinbiyi back at fluked Miller after an impressive loan spell.

I just hope we are promoted under MM so we stop having the moronic "the only manager to get us promoted to the Premiership' comments, completely ignoring the pile of evidence already cited above that he was anything but a success and after spending the odd £24m left us looking at the distinct possibility of relegation to Div 1 with a nothing squad.

I think it was trying to get Akinbiyi got Dean Sturridge instead

  36. Putting the Dave Jones debate aside, Dean Sturridge was my favourite Wolves striker since SGB and for a season and a half he seemed an absolute bargain.

If only we could have picked him up earlier in his career. But then you could say that about nearly all of Jones' signings.

People say McCarthy is a one trick pony when it comes to tactics... and they'd probably be right. But Dave Jones is a one trick pony as a manager full stop. His 'development' of younger players can be demonstrated by such things as blaming a draw away at Bolton entirely on Lee Naylor; his transfer policy is one-dimensional - buy in a ready made player (invariably expensive fee and expensive wages and usually getting on a bit) and tactically he was just as much of a 4-4-2 merchant as McCarthy.

Jones' man-management was bizarre. I remember reading an interview with Shaun Newton and/or Kevin Cooper once about how they'd often go to Jones to see why the weren't both playing in the team at the same time. Jones would say he thought they were too similar. Yes, Dave, they're both wingers. One is right footed, the other is left footed. You signed them, remember?
