not that it matters but someone help me out! What was clear and obvious about their red card that makes it only yellow? Looked a red to me.

Thought it was a yellow at the time.

    But...

...The fact it took more than 2 minutes and multiple viewings to come to a decision suggests that it wasn’t a ‘clear error’ and I was hugely surprised that it was overturned.

Not a clear and obvious error but if Coady had been sent off for the same challenge I'd have been annoyed!!

I think a yellow was the right decision. I don’t think it was a clear error though, so probably shouldn’t have been overturned.

Reckless but I'm not 100% convinced it was dangerous.

Herrera should have had a second yellow for his foul on Jonny.

Is VAR allowed to look at that or is it just red cards?

I’m normally not overly critical but VAR seems to only favor top teams in the CL and FA Cup

I think it very forceful but was also a genuine attempt to play the ball. He went in with pace because he needed that pace to reach that position on the pitch.

A yellow would have been a fair original decision. However, I am a little confused as to the role of VAR. For me, it boils down to a judgement call. I don't think the referee missed any major element of the foul, so I don't see where a clear and obvious error is made.

Neither here nor there for the game, but raises questions about the application of VAR next season in the league.

Under the current climate I thought it was a red and none of the replays made it look any better. It just got worse and worse on each viewing. He definitely cleans Jota out before making contact with the ball. If Boly’s tackle at Man City was a red then that was also a sending off.

Yea, I don’t get it either....
He clearly took out Jota’s legs first and could have injured Jota, who fell awkwardly.
    Anyone able to explain?

My main problem with the whole affair was the fact that we ended up essentially getting punished. United ended up with the psychological boost of keeping 11 players on the pitch and we get extra minutes added at the end to have to defend for. As has been said - from the one angle a red looked a little harsh but it was in no way an obvious mistake.

Actually, I thought the opposite. For me it was a yellow (red would have been harsh - Jota knew what he was doing there) but it broke up the play, gave us a free kick, took time - just when we needed to regroup a little. No complaints from me.

It's why VAR voice comms should be piped into the coverage, it was a baffling overturn unless the referee made the red decision based on it being a "last man" red instead of a reckless tackle red.

Martin Keown summed it up perfectly for me - it was a yellow.

He went in at pace, and it was slightly late and clumsy - but you could tell it wasn't malicious. The ref could be seen on TV mouthing "it was for the trailing leg" to the players - but the trailing leg was tucked away, and probably even keeping the player upright at the pace he was going.

If his trailing leg had been loose and/or pointing forward, then it would have been completely different and a straight red.

Even the BBC had to watch it back several times from various angles and at differing speeds before they changed their mind about the tackle.

The pace of the player (bearing in mind the pitch was slippery too) made the tackle look worse than it was. I've seen far worse tackles (and deliberately malicious too) either not given at all, or at the most, given a yellow.

The tackle was calculated, you could see it coming a mile off, and Lindeloff was for me out of control in that two footed lunge. The ref's instinct was correct, it was red all day long.... But it was Man U, wor it?

    Clear red.

Missed ball and took the man out with excessive force.

We've had players sent off for winning the ball with excessive force. The other thing to bare in mind is that lindeloff had been waiting to get his retribution from an earlier encounter where he squared to jota, as jota had dared go for the ball. Red card if we are going to be consistent with today's stupid rules.

If that was a tackle by Boly at Old Trafford that would have been a red and stayed a red.

It was clear and obvious that it was a tackle made by someone in a red shirt and therefore does not count

He took jotas standing foot after the ball had gone, only catching the ball as he slid through. He had to take out jota as we broke away and he accomplished that irrespective of whether it was mistimed or not. The referee was correct, the var wrong.

Why wasn’t the double rugby tackle on Boly and Donk not reviewed but the ball to hand on Jonny was?

If that was Keown, he’d have thought it wasn’t a foul. My only issue with it, is if Jota had his studs in the ground and leg planted, he’d have snapped him in half. Wasn’t a clever tackle.

Happens every week with players blocking like that, but not tackling and taking the man. It was out of control on that surface.

Red for me that amount of force could have broken a leg.
Maybe there needs to be something between a red and a yellow ,compare Coadys booking and it doesn't make sense that it's the same punishment.

Took out his standing leg, Jota is very lucky not to have sustained serious injury.
